Editing a save file (or any other way to remove an item from an expedition)?

I've got a bugged item on one of my expedition ships (heavily modded game, don't know why these specific ships blow up when this item is equipped now). Morale is maxed out, no events failed, but this type of ship just... explodes when they pick up this one guy. Anyway, I'd like to be able to just edit out or otherwise remove the guy/item as opposed to loading a prior save as it would mean backtracking a few hours and expeditions in the arctic rarely crop up.

It might be possible using a hex editor. You need to find the address containing the item reference. Most likely the file contains a fixed number of slots for expedition items for each ongoing expedition.
Best way is to compare 2 files where the only change is in the number of items on the expedition. Good luck.

Think I found the cause, but not really any way to salvage the expedition. The ship added by the mod has a ludicrous 500k hitpoints in the assets file, but the game caps at 32767. That admiral adds 800 so it's probably flipping negative. Shaving the HP down to 30k can probably avoid this in the future.
