I's about the depot, it says free harbour area needed.

That means it has to be built on water in one of your harbors area of influence. If the building shows red it means it is blocking something else in the harbor move it around till you see the building clearly. There is a mod for land built depots if you use mods.

I don’t think depots require area of influence from a harbor I occasionally build them on different coasts in the same island

The area of the coast that you build a depot has an area in which you can place the depot. That, in my opinion, is that harbors or coasts area of influence since you cannot build a depot outside of that area. I consider all the coast areas of an island as harbors.
