There don't seem to be any servers available to enable me to logon and it won't even let me play offline. I logged in successfully yesterday and saved my credentials, so I should be able to play it without a connection to the 'net!
Maybe everyone else has a permanent connection to the web, but we travel full-time and often don't have Internet access. Bit of a deal-breaker for me if I can't even launch the game.
I see the game on sale, but then see uPlay and think "ehh, there are other city builders out there".
Tbh just get over it, stopp crying, install the launcher and enjoy a really beautiful game.
That's fine, if the launcher decides to work on that particular occasion.
Many a time it has informed me it's "unable to authenticate" and not let me access what I paid for. Based on the Steam reviews, I'm not the only one.
And those are the people who are usually suffering from the well known
PEBKAC error, and here is an example.

This Customer here writes about errors with the Ubisoft Cloud and losing his
Save game twice.

I never had that happen to me, and i'm not even playing the Game on Windows
thanks to Valve and Proton of course.
Being aware from the beginning that the Game is very time consuming, one of the
very first things i have done to research where the Game stores the local copy of the
Save files, within the Folder structure of the Proton prefix.
Thanks to all the lovely and helpful people on that "so called" internet,
it didn't took that long to gain that knowledge.
So i just wrote a tiny script for rsync, and every time when i quit the Game
i run that Script to synchronize the Save files to my chosen location on my Disk.
And of course i tested it twice before, if i can recover that Save file before
i started my legit session. And not to my surprise it worked like a charm.
Yes i know not everyone out there can be or is "Computer savvy" but i'm
convinced a lot of those negative reviews are simply based on lack of
Computer knowledge.
I was putting almost 480 hours in Anno 1800 so far, never had any issues since
day one playing it, nor any authentication errors, and i did and still do enjoy the
Game in all it's glory.
Well done Ubisoft
created a Masterpiece of a Game.
And i don't buy anything that requires a third party launcher.
