How to follow a ship with the camera

So there are locked discussions saying it's not possible but if you select your ship and press F1 it does just that.

Ahoy!

I figured out that you can use F1 for any objects too, like a building, etc.
If you don't have anything selected, then you have a free camera mode and can move around using A,W,S,D.
And look around with the mouse.
