DLC Worth Getting or How best to get them.
What DLC are worth getting, or if its an "All of them are worth getting in their own way" type game, what would you guys say is the best (Cheapest) way to get them all, buying season passes? the bundle?

Cheapest way is to get the Annoversary or Gold edition on sale, though if you are particular to get it only on steam, it may not necessarily be the best deal. But since your mouse icon shows you already have at least the base game on steam, you would have to get new dlcs on steam. Otherwise, dlcs not gotten from steam won't work with the steam base game. So discounted steam season passes would be your most logical choice for this game at this point.

All the dlcs are decent and some combo well with others. For example, your salvager from Sunken Treasures can dive for loot in other regions like the Arctic or Enbesa as well if you also own those dlcs. The harbor master dlc from season pass 3 works in other regions as well except Enbesa and I think the Arctic.

Gotcha! Does this go on sale often? Or will I be waiting a long time before it comes around again and should just get the season passes now?

The base game is already a big package to play through, so it is worth buying the game by itself, if you don't care too much about the DLCs.

Personally, I consider the Gold Edition the go-to version of the game, since, imho, the DLCs add a huge load of additional playability and "completeness" to the game.
The Annoversary Edition with the cosmetic DLCs also included is fine and dandy, but the cosmetics don't add anything to the gameplay of the game - they just add visual variety.

So, if you haven't bought the base game, then I'd recommend getting the Gold Edition. If you have already bought the base game, the next best option is to get the Season Passes on discount. Don't buy individual DLC, and if they add any other DLC packages, then really carefully look at price and content compared to the Season Passes. Last time they offered alternative DLC packages, they were actually a worse deal than the Season Passes.

Gotcha! How often do the Season Passes go on sale would you say? Often or like only during the major ones?

Major sales events like halloween, christmas or easter should be a relatively safe bet. Not sure they're reliably put on sale e.g. during Summer Sale or other occasions, though.

Get the main game and dlcs on sale.

Different dlcs change the game / add to it in various ways. Some of the most popular are:
- Sunken Treasure: Continental Island for making a big boy city not other-wise possible
- Bright Harvest; A nice efficiency boost (its nicely done)
- Land of Lions: Africa. Its well liked generally (Also adds research institute laterish which is significantly changes specialist acquisition. - Significant Change to gameplay
- Docklands - big change to gameplay through a change in the way supply lines are managed.
- The Passage - the arctic area, gas for cheap electricity

You might like the idea of season 1 and 2 first. Many of the above are in season 1 and 2.

I personally like all of these, but the ones aboves are often touted as the most interesting. Mostly seasons 3 and 4 have:
- Botanica, its minor get it if you have the $$ and dont care or package it with Season one, no worries. (Season 1)
- Tourist Season: Additional population tier. Hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes and eifel tower. Additional, somewhat significant cosmetics / pallette, nice overall but also non essential.
- New World Rising: Big New World Island and Hacienda System - good.
- High Life: Skyscraper System, good overall, new cosmetics.
- Empire of the Skys: Mail System and Airships.

MOST people struggle if you enable ALL season at once.

I would consider just base game and / or season 1 and 2 to start with then go from there.

(If forgot Palace DLC: I like it. It also has efficiency mechanics and cosmetics.)

Since you're already "locked into Steam" for this game, you'll want to get the season passes only during major Steam sales. But since Steam also has many smaller sales in between, you might get lucky and this game and its season passes could go on sale as well then. Though someone who's been following Steam sales for this game might be able to give you a better answer since I never got this from Steam.

If you didn't get the gold edition, be prepared to pay at least $20 more if you get the season passes separately even during a sale. For many, this game's Ubisoft launcher is notorious though I never had major problems with it. For me though, it's not the launcher but the fact that this game doesn't have dynamic pricing allowing you to pay only for the DLCs you don't already own that irks me most.

It's fine to enable all DLCs at the same time because you can choose to expand into other regions only when you're ready, unless you're playing with AIs and competing with them in land grabs in those regions.

As for non-region DLCs like docklands or bright harvest, you don't have to worry about their mechanics until you reach certain milestones. Iirc, docklands only triggers once you reach 250 artisans and you can ignore it until you're ready. Enabling more guidance during the game set up will also guide you in the basics of the DLCs.

That's not true. I got the base game on steam and the DLCs on uplay and it works flawlessly from steam.

You'll need to be clear. You need an Ubisoft account regardless which store you got the DLC from. Which store did you get your base game and DLCs from exactly? Did you get your base game and/or DLCs directly from Ubisoft Connect or a 3rd party store? Did you initially directly buy the base game and some DLCs on Ubisoft Connect, then subsequently buy the Gold edition from Steam, which might have allowed Ubisoft Connect to recognize your earlier direct purchase? What was the exact historical sequence of purchase events you made for the base game and DLCs in relation to which store you got them from?

And since the last Patch and Release of Proton 9.02

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/7760

the Game works again simply and like @Schildermaler said flawlessly.
You bought the game and season pass DLCs on Steam and activated it on Ubisoft. Of course it should work as intended although it seems not all players have the same smooth experience. That's not the same as buying DLCs from a 3rd party site that's not the Ubisoft or Steam store and trying to play it with the base game on Steam.

Even if it's a new patch that allows DLCs purchased directly from the Ubisoft store to work with the Steam base game, that doesn't mean DLCs purchased from any 3rd party store besides Ubisoft would work with the Steam base game. Last I heard, this is not possible.

I bought Anno 1800 without any DLCs on steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/916440/Anno_1800/

Then I bought "Anno 1800 - Gold Edition Year 5" on mmoga[.de] and activated it on uplay.

When I start the game base game on steam, I can still use all DLC from the uplay version .

I stand corrected on getting DLCs from outside Steam that work so long as you already own the base game on Steam. When you launch the game from Steam, I believe it will redirect you to Uplay where both the base game and dlcs have been activated.

But if you had purchased your base game on a 3rd party platform that's not Steam and bought the DLC from Steam (if that's possible), it won't run afaik because as the DLC store page says "This content requires the base game Anno 1800 on Steam in order to play." From what I understand, the Steam DLCs are tied to the base game in your Steam account.

I didn't disagree! What you're saying seems to be correct.

Thanks for clarifying! Though it's too late for me to get the base game on steam, good to know so players don't spend more than they need to.
