If it is to make a profit the pick up item would have to cost less then the buying ai is paying for it obviously. You have to be aware that AI's change products occasionally so you may be buying something to sell that the other AI no longer wants.
If you follow the ship there will be a fly out at the end of the sale showing green or red of the items sold.
And you should be able to go to the statistics screen under storage tab, select one of the products you trading and the trade route should appear to the right of the screen.
