Can’t buy Annoversary edition because I bought the base game two weeks ago?!?
I tried Anno 1800 for the first time during the recent free play weekend, and really enjoyed it. So much so, that I bought the base game as it was on sale, and the complete “Annoversary” edition was way too much $$ to jump into for a game I only had a day’s experience with.

Now, I see the Annoversary edition is 40% off for the Autumn sale, and I’ve had a little more time with the game, so I’m ready to buy it.

But I add it to my cart, and Steam won’t let me buy it for myself, because I already own the base game! I don’t even care about not getting the price of the base game knocked off the Annoversary price, it was only $15. But to not allow me to buy the Annoversary edition at all, because I already own a single part of it? That’s kind of messed up.

Am I doing something wrong here? Is there some way around this? Because I’m definitely not going to just buy every piece of DLC individually for hundreds of dollars because I bought the base game on sale without knowing it would lock me out of any packages forever.

The Anniversary Edition is 40% off on the Ubisoft store, also.

$77.99 Canadian.

You could purchased it directly from them if you are having problems with Steam.

While it might seem a bit counterintuitive, there's a workaround for this situation. Instead of buying the Anniversary edition directly, you can consider purchasing the DLCs individually that are included in the Anniversary edition. This way, you can still get the additional content without having to repurchase the base game.

Counterintuitive would be putting it mildly. It would cost me hundreds of dollars to buy all of the DLCs individually, as opposed to the Annoversary edition which is currently on sale for under $80, but which I’m not allowed to buy on account of the grave sin of already buying the base game!! WTAF?!

I’ll not be doing that.

Well, that’s an idea. I’m not a huge fan, because I really prefer to have all my games on Steam. But if I can’t find a way around this debacle, I might just resort to it. I can only play it on GeForce Now, so I’ll have to make sure I can play it there if it’s only in my Ubisoft library.

But I have to say, this leaves a really bitter taste in my mouth for Ubisoft, because I’m sure this is their decision, and not Steam’s.

But thank you for the tip!

While it won't be hundreds of dollars, it will be more than the Annoversary Edition. You can buy all the DLCs that would come with the Annoversary Edition for $116.18 while on sale. Because all you need is:

Season 1 Pass
Season 2 Pass
Season 3 Pass
Season 4 Pass
Deluxe Edition
Cosmetic Bundle #1
Cosmetic Bundle #2

Granted this sucks because Ubisoft makes poor decisions. I love the game, and the actual developers that made it, called Bluebyte Software (which has since been absorbed sadly), but I have no love for Ubisoft.

However, one thing to consider is buying it all piecemeal. You don't have to get everything now. Just get the Season Passes. The only thing the Deluxe Edition adds to the actual gameplay is another Medium difficulty AI opponent. And, cosmetics, while fun, really aren't essential. Seriously, they're nice and all, but you won't feel like your missing out on anything while playing the game.

So spend $51.21 to get just the Season Passes now, and get the rest of that stuff later.

This is a known problem with all Ubisoft games (some other publishers also do it). Instead of having the Annoversary as "Complete your collection" listing on the steam store they list all versions separately and you can only buy one and never buy the other or upgrade to them.

I wanted to buy the base Anno 1800 for a very long time, but knew this would happen so just avoided the game until the complete version is as a separate package at a discount (like now; but currently people are reporting issues with the DLCs not actually being added to your account correctly :rfacepalm: ).

Buying the DLC 'solution' is BS, as you pay a ton more to buy the DLC even when on 'discount' than you would with the Complete version of the game.

Hi - you can remove the Base Game via Steam Support and then purchase the Annoversary Edition. Thats the way around it, i guess :(

I saw someone suggest to someone else with the same complaint to delete the base game from their library to enable them to buy the Annoversary edition.

Have you actually done it? I’d be willing to do this, since I’m out the $15 for the original game either way, but I’d hate to delete it, then find out I still can’t buy the Annoversary edition and be out the $15 and have no game!

I’ve decided that I’m not going to buy the DLC individually, so if it works out that I can’t buy the Annoversary edition, then Ubisoft has gotten their last dime from me, and I’ll remember this for the future. Shoddy way of doing business IMO.

I've seen that stated elsewhere, too. But Steam Support just got back to me, and said that it wouldn't work. According to them, even if I delete the base game from my library, I won't be able to purchase the Annoversary edition. So have you actually successfully done it?

Steam put it squarely on Ubisoft, and said it was a decision made by them not to allow an upgrade path, because as we all know from other titles, lots of them allow you to upgrade to complete editions and only pay for the parts you don't already have.

Let's look into this for you.

We can indeed see here that you already have the base game so you won't be able to purchase Anno 1800 - Definitive Annoversary even if you remove the game from your library.

Whether or not to ship an upgrade path is up to the publisher, not Valve. You may wish to reach out to the publisher’s support team by using the information from the official support section here to make that request.

Because we have provided all the information we have for your issue, we're now closing this help request. If you have an unrelated issue please open a new help request and we will be happy to help.

Very wise on that part, but Now Team are done with Anno 1800, it's now safe to order annoversary that game you already not had, so it's safe now that they are done with anno 1800 and move next new game projoct. you can check it out anno union news, somewhere in dec 2022 to April 2023, where they said they are done with it.

But for OP, Ouch, not lot of people are aware or know ahead how it work. I don't get annoversary because I kind of been there before anno 1800 come out to now, I did buy every DLC right of bat at full price since I did enjoyed anno 1800, (1,700 gameplay hours over or at least) I had not paid any sale, and I'm poor guys. LOL. Do your best to get most of it on sale, even you unable to get Annoversary unless you buy on ubisoft, beside Ubisoft make sure all game need to run by Ubisoft, last I recalled.

It's felt trap, buy cheap base game, not know whatever you enjoy or not, once you enjoy it, you want to buy annoversary due you enjoyed game and it's best deal, but unable because already had base game, and end up paid more for DLC, yea, that is felt a painful in heart.

Only I suggest to talk with steam support, maybe they might understanding and refund and let you buy game, but it's not guaranteed yet worth to try, but sale is limited time, but there is always be sale, so I don't know how long steam support take care of your ticket and even willing to do.
