To play the free weekend do this

If you open the game from Desktop it';s going to ask you to activate it on Ubisoft, but since its a free week, you don't have an Activation Key, so what you need to do is go to Steam Library, click on Anno, and then the Play button and selec Free Weekend

My wife and I had the same problem.
We solved it: She created a lobby -> set the lobby to public -> I joined via Ubisoft Social App -> Right click her profile picture -> join lobby

sounds like a bs work around to trick people into making a E-mail list for them to sell

It gave me an activation key after a while, but I did have to launch Ubisoft launcher 3 times after it updated itself. Very intuitive.
