Populating new island
Am I missing something on how to get farmers or a work force to a new island?

The only way to transfer a work force to a new island is via a commuter pier, which you get at Engineers level. Otherwise, an island must build up its own population, so you must build a town there, as well. For small islands, this is tricky, and usually requires being supplied with goods from the other islands, as they either cannot make, or do not have the room, to make themselves.

You should note you will need a commuter pier on each island and a commuter ship will travel back and forth so there is no need for you to supply a ship.

That''s what I figured. Fairly new to the game, so was just wondering if I was missing something. Thank you.

One added benefit of growing population on multiple islands is tax evasion.
Once a population level on an island has grown beyond 1000 people, you start paying the royal tax for that population level. Evading that tax by building multiple islands to just below 1000 peasants, workers (and maybe artisands if the island can supply itself) each can optimize your early-game income from population.
