So now I have to rip up half my city to put a railroad in?
First time trying to do oil and really frustrated. On the starter island, the only oil is really far from your main port and in between is my main city. I didn't know I was going to need this big corridor for a railway so now I'm screwed because there's literally no way to get power without ripping out a huge chunk of the city...

Tbh.. I feel totally stuck now and wanting to just give up. I spent way too much time building my city to have to destroy half of it for this..

I know I can have oil shipped in but doesn't that still require the oil port and railroads to do it? So doesn't seem possible either.

I thought maybe I could just have rail connect the power plant that needs oil, to the refinery that makes it but no... it HAS to be stored on the beach with in an oil trading port that I have no intention to use... Why?

The oil on your starter island won't power more than two plants. The trading port is on the beach because you are supposed to import more oil from the New World. That's why it's the central location.

As for your city layout, you can move existing building. Trust me, it's not the end of the world scenario you're envisioning. You don't have to tear down half your city to put in a one-tile wide corridor.

Especially since you can now move whole sections of your city at the same time.
Railways also don't take a lot of space, since they're 1x1 per piece and you don't need all that many separate lines to run them efficiently.

Now I'm stuck on the catch 22 where there's no oil tanker or even motor parts for sale by anyone friendly so now I have no choice but to import oil while my industry sits idle grr... wait it says "oil cannot be traded" now on my oil dock.. what the...

Ok I got it going. My head hurts from the tetrising that had to be done in an area I'd already had filled in to the last square.

Oil never able to be traded.

Make sure one of your power plants is near the coastline, build a Steam Shipyard in range of the Power Plants (they need electricity to operate). Build a Motor Assembly Plant (also need electricity).

The few oil wells you're able to build on your starting island are meant for you to be able to get this up and running, not to run your entire civilization on.

Awesome! Yeah, the Tetrising can be real sometimes, but your problem solving skills are on point.

You have to build your tankers yourself. The oil on the island is enough for two power plants as others said. That means you are able to produce steam motors and then steam ships (including oil tanker). Put the power plant near the beach, so it can power the steam motor factory AND the steam shipyard. You can use the other for your population, to get your investors up and runnning, because money.

Another tip for future play is do two rails lines side by side to further your efficiency in transporting it to where it needs to go.
I hope this helps, good luck!

There are a lot of things in your first playthrough that will mess with your city layout because you couldn't know they were coming and plan accordingly. But it's doable and next time you can think ahead.

My first city sucked. We all (who didn't first look up a game guide) went through it.
