Trying to build plots for my wheat field and its telling me I can't because "module limit reached". I have no idea what this is and I can't find anything about it online anywhere.

You've already built enough fields for maximum productivity.
If you want to build more for aesthetic reasons, then hold shift.

any chance you built more than one field and didn't switch buildings to build more?

My farm is telling me I need more fields. I can build 96 out of 144 of them and then it stops because of this "module limit'

Are you laying them in a blueprint mode, by any chance? If you have any blueprints layed out, try building them, the count may get updated

I don't think you can lay out farm fields in blueprint.

I may have other stuff in blueprint mode elsewhere. That's bizarre though.

Of course you can. Look at the fields that appear transparent - those are blueprinted.

Something got tripped up, probably because I was close to bankrupt while building. I just deleted and redid it and it was fine.

You may be correct. If so, it is so hard to tell the difference between blueprint fields and actually built ones that you may as well just do what I did and delete and do over.

Yep, fully agree on that point, I always struggle to distinguish the blueprinted fields from the built ones.
