this is getting silly, need a degree in computer language to download a mod, to anno and steam, sort this out, i just want to play :-)

You don't need any degrees or accounts to install mods for Anno.
Granted, the game doesn't make it a brain-dead experience (i.e. Steam workshop), but it's not that hard, too.

1. Go to https://github.com/xforce/anno1800-mod-loader/releases
2. Download the loader.zip file from the latest release
3. Extract the archive into your <Anno 1800 installation folder>\Bin\Win64, accept to overwrite the original files
4. Create Mods folder either in your Anno 1800 installation directory, or in your Documents\Anno 1800 folder.
5. Extract the mods you download into the newly created Mods folder.
6. Launch the game, if the mods were loaded successfully, you'll see a "Mods detected" in the bottom-left corner of the main menu screen, just below the menu options.

If the mods are still not loaded, you might need to install Microsoft's VC 2019 redistributable package: https://aka.ms/vs/16/release/VC_redist.x64.exe

To disable a mod, delete it from the Mods folder, or rename its folder to start with "-".

I'm still having issues, followed these directions, including installing the redistribute package. Trying to use Spice It Up, the most updated version. extracting it to here: D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Anno 1800\Mods

Every time I load the game, nothing is showing up.

Installed vortex, Installed mod. Game won't load from vortex so I still have to play via steam, but the mod isn't showing.

Either in the installation directory, or in the Mods folder there should be another folder named logs - this is where mod loader (the one you extracted into bin) writes any issues it might have.
Delete everything from this folder and launch the game. It should create a new file in logs. If it doesn't, then it's something wrong with the loader. If it does, copy the contents of the log file here

It's creating a new log, but still not showing mods. All the log has is below:
[2023-03-08 10:42:23.025] [info] Start applying xml operations
[2023-03-08 10:42:23.025] [info] Finished applying xml operations

Try iModYourAnno from gridhub for mod management and be carefull with the elder nexus mods, don´t install to much, better see if the game runs before instaling more. Not like me with learning by failing.

Gridhub: jacobs collection and spice it up had no issues

My introduction to computers was late 60s, my biological father was head of the school of maths at a local uni and 'babysitting' me was plonking me in the computer console room where the post-grad students would log me into play star trek, the stars were asterixis, the enterprise was an 'E' and kilingons and romulans were k and r. Ten years later, still before IBM produced their 'personal computer' which gives us the 'PC' label that everyone still uses, and I owned one of the earliest home computers and was learning coding. Now contemplating starting another masters degree, apparently retired by the world for being too old to employ (but not yet old enough to pension), after 30 years of coding for a living. And guess what? I cannot get this effed anno 1800 mod loader to work, I cannot make sense of the convoluted and unnecessary mess that is the github page for the mod loader, and I cannot understand the incompetence of the ubisoft staff that have not integrated this process into game and cannot get their own game launcher to keep the files up to date.

But guess I must be new to computers, eh?

Apparently yes. You don't even need a mod loader. Just install them manually, quick and easy.
