why is it so hard to equip for an expedition?
I can find all the things that I want to take but, although on my ship-of-the-line I have plenty of places to put them, I cannot fill the slots. I understand that I need room to bring things back but 3 empty slots?

Not positive what you're trying to ask honestly. Ships have 2 different kinds of inventory slots. The top slots are for basically anything and provide full benefits during expeditions. The bottom slots can only be filled by things labeled as for ships. Nothing else can be put in those spots.

If you're talking about keeping space free for the items you earn then it's not really necessary. I personally fill every spot in my expedition ships, with 1 spot reserved for schnapps. In the event I get a bonus item during the expedition I'll trade/throw away the schnapps for it. Once the expedition returns successfully, it will award you all the items even if you have no free slots.

I think for the few starting expeditions, you dont need to equip anything at all and still able to success.

Sometime you able to find something during the expedition, if you have all the slots filled, then you will have to drop something for the new found item.

Hello,
Excepted the 2 first expeditions for the new continents , which are easy and able to make with your first ship...
the others must be made with a cargo ship to be safe , with schnapps or champagne (won in islands after somes festivals !) and :
Dr.Salvador,Mother of pearls,Archbishop Archibald, Professor Razzaq and Captain Ibrahim and Vice-Almirante Gonçalves...
All theses items are sold by ELi Bleaksworth 's Harbourg and Isabel Sarmento 's Harbourg...
Long time after you may put somes Legendary...

I always use items when possible. As way2cool mentioned, you can put ship items into the ship slots which frees up cargo space. This tends to fulfill any force or navigation requirements. If you do use goods, then choose things that have dual purpose like schnapps which fulfills medicine and extra rations. I have always completed all my expeditions with a clipper and the right items.

That's got to be my problem, I am trying to put items that are not specifically for ships into the item slots.

Visit Archie and Bleakworth. Don't bother spending any money on rerolls early on, just see what they have. Often you can find a good specialist or item to boost Navigation or Naval Power or Force that you can equip in the ship specialist slots.

Pirates often drop good specialists too when sunk.

The game is supposed to be hard.

You can't be prepared for everything, especially in the early game. Do your best.

The easrly expeditions are easy, anyway.

Is this a German version of Churchill's famous description of the Royal Navy?

I find stuff I pick up as final expedition rewards just get dropped off at the harbor when they return. No need for the space to hold em. Rewards gained during the expedition do require space. I bring a couple of types of rations and throw em overboard when some mid expedition reward is work keeping.

The search-items feature helps a lot. If you are preparing an exhibition that needs force, for instance, then type "Force" in the space next to the magnifying glass icon and see what you have available. I agree that you don't need to reserve empty spaces, but fill one or two spaces with goods that you won't mind throwing overboard if the need arises, perhaps timber (which is helpful for crafting as long as you have it aboard) or a third source of rations. I almost always use schnapps (medicine) and champagne (diplomacy) for rations, and often beef (force). Of course, the Great Eastern is far and away the best ship for expeditions because of the number of holds it has.

Thanks for this...I didn't realize this could be done.

You get the 3 items you get at the end of the expedition even if all your slots are full. You do not need 3 free slots for those as they are directly deposited to your island storage.

You only need space for the random items you get during the expedition.
