You can make money off of lots of things, listing them all would be listing half the game.
But anyway, the first (smallish but effective) money making scheme you'll encounter is probably selling soap to Eli.
Also, once you have some happy investors you're probably not going to ask for money again.
In short, just play the game, don't care too much about earning lots of money. It's only really important as long as you don't have any. And in a pinch, the newspaper can provide some large, temporary boost to income.
Try selling beer to pirates. Or sell weapons to Isabell. Gramophones for Ketema. Combine with Docklands for even more money.
