Exactly so, as I just discovered. Oh well, for my first game I've learned lots, like not to put a zoo in a downtown area. : ) Now I'll start from scratch and if I've improved. It's a great game and a big improvement over Anno 2070, the only other Anno I have played.
You will lose some reputation if you buy them out. It depends on the type of AI. One star AI will even like when you buy a share or two, but you'll get negative points if you buy all of them or buy their island. You can pretty easily prevent that from having consequences by giving them money and compliments in the meantime and doing quests. So if you don't buy too many islands in too short of a time you won't have a problem.
Harder AI will react more negatively. You will lose reputation faster and three star AI will even straight up declare war when you buy an island. An easy way to avoid that is having a non agression pact with them. While that is active, they can't do anything to you. Make sure, you have enough time left on the contract before you buy an island, that way you can work yourself towards their good graces again. Do quests, flatter them etc.
