Questions.
I am a noob on sim builders. But this game looks really good.

Do you need to min/max your cities to get to end game and win? I know always the "best" way to build to get the most out of it, but for me I kinda enjoy building things that would look cool, instead of just min/maxing my way to victory.

Like I am sure in these types of games they have flow charts, and proper setups, but do I need that to get full enjoyment out of it?

So after ~30 hours of play i unlocked Engineers and Tourists... and i was SHOCKED at the amount of content which now awaits me. Its like everything i learned and did up until now... but times 3x.
In this stage of the game the challenge really begins, because now you can build skyscrapers.
And the higher you build your skyscrapers the more and more stuff they need.
When you could away with lazy, unoptimized builds before you now want to look into stuff serious and figure it out.
This is where min/maxing and managing SO much different production chains start - and i dont see it ending ANYTIME soon.

So yes: if you want the highest of highest skyscrapers - you will need to min/max. Or conquer a dozen different islands to fuel the needs of your ever higher and higher growing cities.

My friend gifted me it and going to try it. That sucks that i got to build a perfect town to do anything. Oh well. Still going to give it a shot.

I am not that far into the game but from what i can see you either go with couple very, very optimized islands or many, maaany unoptimized ones (which means taken them from the AI by war).

I did the mistake spending so much time on like 3 islands - meanwhile the AI took all the map, so now i either need to go war with them or really optimize what i have.

In Anno you try to optimize a population tier to make it evolve. So you try to optimize for that because it's the goal. There are decoration buildings and you can try to make something pretty but space is valuable.

The early tiers, you don't need to strongly micro-manage, it's easy to transform farmers to workers. And then supply chains are a bit more challenging to transform workers to artisans. But in the last population tiers, it has to be well optimized. You don't need charts for that, but you see in-game that something just doesn't work perfectly and you need to fix so that it flows better, moving building closer to another, or adding/extending a building, or by setting up a new trade route between regions etc.

It's an optimization game in its core, but i never used a chart.

There is no perfect way to play this game. You decide what your "goal" for your city is to be. Some play to have maximum population on their island, You Tube is full of these "ideal" layouts. Others play, myself included, to just enjoy having an attractive, interesting and functional city.
Winning in Anno 1800 is meaningless unless your playing a scenario. You can change your city layout as you progress through the game, move your industry or farming community to another island to allow room for higher level of citizens, skyscrapers, monuments, etc. much like real life. To me that is the enjoyment of the game. Develop you own style of play and have fun. Welcome to Anno 1800.

No, you don't. Play the game the way you want.

There is no min/maxing other than you noticing that "huh, need more of X" and then figuring out how to get it. It's not a puzzle game.

Thanks for the info. It is pretty addicting. The game told me no achievement for playing this long. I was like WHERE DID MY TIME GO.

It took me a few to understand how to make money, but I think i got the hang of it now. Even though it makes me nervous to watch my income go into the red and back up. Like stay happy people!

Remember you can sell excess goods to NPC traders or AI's . Set it up to maintain a certain amount for your pops use and sell off the rest. The Prison buys soap and potatoes for a decent income. Set up a Schooner with a continuous trade route and watch you coffers grow.
