Reefer's are generally better for trading between regions. Cargo ships are generally better for trading between islands.

It's a bit more nuanced than that, of course. At double the Influence Point cost and higher upkeep cost, Reefer's are more of a specialization ship. Like you don't really want to use them in all your trade routes (I mean you can if you have the money and points to spare), but it's more like you use them for consumable goods that need to be replenished fast, like Coffee, Rum, Cigars, etc.

Cargo ships are still good with their two item slots. You can put an engine to increase speed and reduce cargo slowdown, AND a white flag to prevent them from being attacked. And again, at half the Influence Point cost, you can get two for the price of one Reefer.

Cargo Ship is way better in generally, due 2 more slot that item help with trade ship with speed or loading or white flag, so go on, but while World Class Reefer is faster on very, very long route on world regions but only had one item slot for specialization, I prefer airship over this, but even so, it's not much, in fact cargo ship can go faster than world Class reefer when right specialization item slot filled.

I hate to said this, Reefer is petty much useless, nice to had only because look of ship and use for regions, but I prefer cargo ship with specialization item and airship, but if only Reefer's had more item spot, that might be other story.

Without specialization item, Reefer do little bit faster than cargo only on very, very long world map, but yup, better off using normal cargo ship with specialization item on cargo ship, beside, ti's odd to had many Reefer in your fleet, shark looking here and there, I prefer normal cargo ship over reefer as it's normal looking ship and you can choice 3 skin set for that cargo ship, more or less. Reefer might nice to had, only one build for collection, but yes, not worth more than one, and player do not even need reefer other than fun to had one.

I sent both from the old world to the new world with the Nathan turbin plus a golden specialist for the cargo, they arrived nearly at the same time.
So for less influence, on the long term, the cargo is better, especially if your ships visit many islands in the same region.

I prefer Airships, only 4 influence, items are easily craftable with no need for land of lions and they can't be attacked so no need to waste influence on escort or trying to get a white flag.

Truth, but I'm little worried about next dlc, empire of sky might or might not change that. But small/large sailing is useful and way cheaper in loacl map more than airship, airship however good for long map to map

Someone worked this out on Reddit but what it boiled down to was Extravaganza Steamers being the most bang for your buck.

But if you haven't got access to that specialist you could make Cargo Ships for local intra-regional trade while your World Class Reefers handle all the inter-region trade.

Or if you can stomach making nice with Anne Harlow, she sells the Extravaganza Steamers pretty regularly. You may have to buy the pirate gunboats and frigates, and resell them to Blake to get them out of the way for an Extravaganza to spawn, but it's not terrible.

Ah, I watch twitter ubisoft live steam about upcoming Empire of Sky, I must said all those Trade airship and War Airship is awesome, but downside all or most ship on sea/ocean look like useless, due awsome airship that look like overpower. but don't get me wrong, it's look awsome, but what happen to old ship on sea/ocean? No more use in late game? Who know, only time tell, but it's do changed once you installed dlc (better start new game maybe due new resource to mine in new world for airship.) I bet those huge trade airship put to Extravaganza steamer to shame, I think but too early to tell.

Bad New, enemies would had war airship, so it's meaning no longer safe for trade airship, however, I'm not sure there is white flag for airship now that a.i might build war airship (Now on other hand, I'm not sure War airship able to destroy on ship on sea/ocean, I know they can shoot other airship for sure.
