Probably not changes to oil?
I'm speculating on the new zone because the other third DLC's per season were the passage, land of lions, and high life - two had new zones and they all were more substantial.
That would be super necessary, I hate the New World (yes dark little secret of me I love Anno but hate it with passion at the same time :P). Islands look big in the map, but there is a lot of mountains and especially a lot of rivers, that make the useful space small. But is a good question, if that’s so if it will work for old saves or you’ll need a new save for getting those bigger islands.
I didn't start at the beginning, but I think it's been compatible the whole way through.
