Play sandbox if you don't want to follow the prompts/quests, if you had follow them your game would've ended (beta limit), and you could've moved on to sandbox mode.
Why? And, stop it.
You could help by flagging my posts. That should hopefully get some more attention and maybe moderators can relay this bugreport to Ubisoft. I did, but every little bit helps !
As to whether this is a bug ? Opposing characters are disapproval-barking at a rate of three to four times per hour, each time yielding between minus two to minus four approval rating. That sums up to an average -10 approval rating per hour. Once they barked their way enough below 30, they start a war against you.
After 9 hours Gasparov had 24 rating and declared war, which dropped him to 0. Melching guy had 31 rating. A war against him would soon follow. The black man had 68 rating and disapproval-barks half as often.
You need to go into sandbox mode and play, and twiddle all the settings for NPC so you can have a nice unobstructed 1800's citybuilding simulator.
even on advance or hard. game you can still survive day to day skirmish. just build some harbor defenses and pay Attention to Diplomacy. if still finding it to difficult change settings try again.
it is best to use the sandbox to do that since with campaign you have to be constantly paying attention to their requests.
Learn to read, learn to play, there is no bug in what you described.
Regarding your difficulty issue: playing on advanced difficulty you can't expect your opponents to go easy on you. You should have chosen normal difficulty and easy AI opponents, then you wouldn't have to worry about war.
Your reputation was getting lower because you didn't expand, your development didn't match your opponents' development and you didn't interact with them at all.
What you describe is choosing wrong difficulty for your playstyle. If you spend 10 hours on the farmers level only then you can't play on any higher difficulty than normal with easy AIs only. For a good player 10 hours would be enough to reach investors.
Nothing here is bugged, it's working totally as intended. You just developed way too slowly in comparison to the difficulty you had chosen.
