Anno 1800
[Gamestopper Bug - Main Campaign] Forced Early War > Game Over
Hello all and especially the developers,

first, I hope someone at Ubisoft reads this. It could potentially break most, especially those taking time to build their dream city, players campaigns leading to an UNAVOIDABLE game over and no option to reload and do it different.

The main campaign is currently bugged, I assume, beginning at Advanced Difficulty (2 of 4 difficulty rating). During the Tutorial I noticed, at random, getting negative approval from several of the 'opposing' characters. Gasparov, some Melching industrialist and a black person. They were all also Advanced Difficulty characters but there are even stronger opponents.

It was usually a minor -2 because they said that they dont approve what Im doing. They didnt tell me why so I ignored this. I assumed their disapproval went back to neutrality and this was wrong.

After 10 hours playing the game very slowly (taking all the time I needed to build my dream city) I had built only Farmers Houses and was beginning upgrading my first few Worker Houses. At that time, the game disallows you to build Harbor defenses, offensive ships and the like and nor would you be able to build up the resources to upkeep an army to defend your city.

Long story short, Gasparov seemed to have gathered enough disapproval due to his constant bickering about my unappealing (?) playstyle and declared war on me. I ignore that too, its not that I could do anything to counter a war. Sidenote: I heavily used Ornaments and changed building location to optimize my city from the start. That took many hours, but was fun and relaxing.

Half an hour later, a warship army entered my harbor and started shooting my harbor buildings. There was a massive Ship-Of-The-Line bristling with cannons as well as half a dozen other and also very large warships.

My 'army' was the 1x dock that had 1x cannon and the tutorial ship that fetched some workers from Edvards islands. I didnt see it attacking and it took only seconds to down it. Then someone that I didnt met yet, I presume that some-time-into-the-tutorial-you-might-loose-a-ship introducionary character, barked at me for loosing my 'flagship'.

A few seconds later, the game over screen popped up, my island was insta-emptied of all that I had built, Gasparvov laughed at me and made jokes and the unknown person that wanted to replace my 'flagship' was still blabbering his / her sentences on top of all other voices.

If the game is released in this condition, I fear many, many players, especially older, slower and female players, will encounter it also and be potentially very, very sad / mad. I mean Anno is about taking your time, right ? And choosing medium difficulty should be manageable.

I seriously hope this gamestopper is fixed and now. Sincerely.

Edit:

1. I posted a bugreport to Ubisoft: # 08601948

2. There is no bug report forum in Steam. There is no bug report function in the Anno 1800 Beta. Reaching the bug report 'function' in the Ubisoft website was a hassle and there is no bug report entry under which I can send a bug report. Adding such an entry and everything else I said might help ?

3. I found a screenshot folder (Documents > Anno 1800 Open Beta > Screenshot) but screenshots I made were not being moved there. I wanted to send the image of the warship fleet in the tutorial. And the unavoidable game over screen.

4. Once Anno 1800 is launched, I presume many, many slower pacing players, just like me, will play the game like they did for all Anno titles, not knowing that they already are on the UNAVOIDABLE path to Game Over X hours later (~10 wasted hours on Advanced Difficulty).

So, you're basically saying you are playing sandbox mode in the campaign, which cripples you because you are supposed to follow the quests and stuff. And you ignored diplomancy. And are now upset that you got attacked without being able to fight back?
Play sandbox if you don't want to follow the prompts/quests, if you had follow them your game would've ended (beta limit), and you could've moved on to sandbox mode.

You could help by flagging my posts. That should hopefully get some more attention and maybe moderators can relay this bugreport to Ubisoft. I did, but every little bit helps !

As to whether this is a bug ? Opposing characters are disapproval-barking at a rate of three to four times per hour, each time yielding between minus two to minus four approval rating. That sums up to an average -10 approval rating per hour. Once they barked their way enough below 30, they start a war against you.

After 9 hours Gasparov had 24 rating and declared war, which dropped him to 0. Melching guy had 31 rating. A war against him would soon follow. The black man had 68 rating and disapproval-barks half as often.

Jesus.. Doesn't seem like a bug. If you don't do quest for the NPC's, if you don't handle diplomacy this happens on all difficulties, and its really not hard to maintain good standing.

You need to go into sandbox mode and play, and twiddle all the settings for NPC so you can have a nice unobstructed 1800's citybuilding simulator.

well you can go in to custom game in sandbox and turn computers off. or put them on easy.
even on advance or hard. game you can still survive day to day skirmish. just build some harbor defenses and pay Attention to Diplomacy. if still finding it to difficult change settings try again.
i love the layout of your city. i will copy you and do the same for mine. i also like to spend alot of time with the ornaments and decorations.

it is best to use the sandbox to do that since with campaign you have to be constantly paying attention to their requests.
Getting flagged for breaking forum rules won't get your post delivered to the developer, just deleted and discarded. The devs don't hang out here, steam isn't even going to sell the game after tomorrow.
Learn to read, learn to play, there is no bug in what you described.
If you want to make sure that Ubisoft hears your feedback then you should post it here: https://forums.ubi.com/forumdisplay.php/2060-Suggestions-Feedback-amp-Questions

Regarding your difficulty issue: playing on advanced difficulty you can't expect your opponents to go easy on you. You should have chosen normal difficulty and easy AI opponents, then you wouldn't have to worry about war.
Your reputation was getting lower because you didn't expand, your development didn't match your opponents' development and you didn't interact with them at all.

What you describe is choosing wrong difficulty for your playstyle. If you spend 10 hours on the farmers level only then you can't play on any higher difficulty than normal with easy AIs only. For a good player 10 hours would be enough to reach investors.
Nothing here is bugged, it's working totally as intended. You just developed way too slowly in comparison to the difficulty you had chosen.
haha, this is not a bug... 10h and still on farmer houses... playing sandboxy on the campaign...
