I want to able to play with my friends some of which will probably only buy it on uplay once it goes for sale.
If I'm not able to play Addons/DLCs on steam then I'll not buy this game at all and say goodbye to my beloved Anno Franchise.
Also, they did it because it is financially advantageous for them and they have the right to do so, just as you have the right to hate them for it, which won't affect their bottom line whatsoever.
All addons and DLCs will be available on Steam and released on the same day as on other stores.
"Will the experience for Steam players be the same as Uplay players?
Everyone who pre-ordered Anno 1800 on Steam will be able to play the game upon its release on April 16 2019 and will receive all future content and game updates at the same time as players on other digital storefronts."
You can play with all players, the store doesn't matter. The game always requires Uplay and Uplay takes care of multiplayer and matchmaking.
"Will Steam players be able to play with all other players?
Yes, Steam players will be able to play online with the same players as Uplay or Epic Games store players. Anno 1800’s multiplayer modus is handled via Uplay regardless of your chosen digital storefront, and will always allow all players to play with and against each other."

Ok, ty for the infos.
Now I'll just need to consider if I want to support this sh*tty behaviour by Ubisoft and even buy the game (cause for me it's Steam or nothing).
It actually is.
They don't care about customers & fans (if you'd look in the forums then you'd see that I'm not the only one who's pissed about that), just about getting a bit more money.
Doing something that just benefits you (even though you wouldn't even need it) is the very definition of sh*tty behaviour.
And the thing is Ubisoft doesn't even need it. If they were close to going bankrupt then this would excuse it imo, but they aren't. They're making a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of money and all they care about is making more.
This is exactly what made EA so extremely unpopular.

To answer your questions;
Will Steam players be able to play with all other players?
Yes, Steam players will be able to play online with the same players as Uplay or Epic Games store players. Anno 1800’s multiplayer modus is handled via Uplay regardless of your chosen digital storefront, and will always allow all players to play with and against each other.
Will future patch and content be available to Steam players?
Steam buyers will receive all future content and game updates at the same time as players on other digital storefronts.
Exactly. People put up with all the crap EA was doing for years until it became so toxic that people finally stopped buying their games. We're seeing the same types of bad behavior from other companies now and many people are rightly p!ssed off. The rest of you are only condoning their bad behavior which is only going to make the problems worse. In this particular case I think its irrelevant because Uplay. I always have to get the Ubisoft games from Uplay anyways because their launcher is janky and always causes me problems with Steam. Thats a big reason why I avoid a lot of Ubi games tho.
Either way, no matter how you look at the situation, removing the game sales from Steam is anti-consumer. If they want to offer it on all the stores then go ahead and do it. If you want to have it exclusive to one distributor then its anti-competitive and anti-consumer behavior. How anyone can look at the situation and decide that removing your choice as a consumer to buy from one store over another is fair behavior is beyond me. If they don't like Steam's cut then they should explain why they want people to buy from other distributors. Then the consumer can decide what they want to do. Do all the consumers want to get it on Steam? Well then maybe the other storefronts should do a better job at attracting customers without having to resort to anti-consumer tactics.
