Why do all the Annos add up to 9?
Anyone know the lore behind this? Maybe a dev? hmmmmmm?

As Spire said, it's pretty much a joke. We're not ruling out that there'll be an Anno whose numbers won't add up to 9, but at the moment, the team would like to keep the theme going. :)

No particular reason, it was a sort-of-kinda superstition or joke that they just rolled with and made a bit of a tradition of sorts now.

They could definitely do an Anno that doesn't add up to 9 if they really wanted to but that would feel a bit wrong by now since they stuck with this for so long.

Oh cool, so it's not set in stone? You guys could change to a different number and keep the joke going for a few more games, should you run out of 9's. Would be cool to see a 20th century Anno game someday. Anno set in the 30s would be pretty sick.

Personally i'm hoping for Roman/Greek/Egyptian Anno, though 30's would be a cool time period as well yeah
I feel like the Annos set in time periods with interesting art and culture are the best ones. 1404, 1701, 1800.....an Art Deco-inspired game would look absolutely gorgeous and it'd probably be pretty fascinating as well. Private car ownership, a couple of public transport options, and tall office towers for the higher population classes.

Hmmm agreed, which makes me think of Japan too for an interesting setting simply due to its more outlandish culture and colorful artwork. Very strong differences in the classes there, perhaps with an honor/dishonor system.

Anno just has a lot of interesting opportunities for future games in general in what setting they might want to stage it in. History is just littered with interesting times, after all.

Yeah they haven't even explored half the interesting ones. To be honest I really hope 1800 gets a full-sized expansion pack where they add a new culture or something.
Dammo, does that mean we won't see a game beyond 1800 and before 2000?? Personally, I would like to see Anno 1950
