1404 seems good but had a lot of limitations and only half done features.
1701 felt like the best all around game in the series. No limitations, everything feeling good and fitting.
It also featured two biomes to play on.
You can get it on GoG as a DRM free game.
I might add its also looking incredibly good. Dont mind its age, it looks still modern. And if you want to push that further you can use third party software improving on it.
