Best Anno to start off?
I've never played a Anno game before, which one would be good to try first?

I would say 1404... it aged well, has a historical theme, fantastic music, many buildings, it's also cheap, has campaign, solo-scenarios, Multiplayer and sandbox.

2205

I have to say that the Nintendo DS's episodes where really good and a little bit more "casual" to play. It's Anno Create a New World and Anno 1701. Check them out. :)

in my eyes 1701 was the best.
1404 seems good but had a lot of limitations and only half done features.
1701 felt like the best all around game in the series. No limitations, everything feeling good and fitting.
It also featured two biomes to play on.
You can get it on GoG as a DRM free game.
I might add its also looking incredibly good. Dont mind its age, it looks still modern. And if you want to push that further you can use third party software improving on it.

1404 or 1503 A.D I Would suggest.

my first was 1701 but 1404 is fantastic!
The consensus among many people is either 1404 or 2070, depending on which scenario you enjoy more.

I love Sci Fi >:)

I'd also say 1404 or 2070. If you don't mind older graphics (but charming nonetheless) 1701 is great as well. 1404 has for it that it has land combat, and although the combat is really simple, I enjoyed it a lot.

1404 with Venice, till now is still the best of series. I tried anno 1800 beta , not bad following 1404 ways.

If you play 2070, you should be properly set up for Anno 1800. I still like Anno 1503 the most, because of it's more extensive combat and narration in my language. In Anno 1503 ships werent armed unless you manually added cannons on them. So you could actually decide to make a 'war' ship and use it for trade. Anno 1404, Anno 2070 and Anno 1800 are very similar while 1503 and 2205 do some stuff very different.

I think that 1701 is a better game to start because it's easier.

If you are going with 1404 be sure to get the 4gb patch or you're going to encounter some problems in the long games

I started with 2070 and it was a great experience. Some of the fun is lost since the community is non existent now days. The game is still really enjoyable though.
