Possible to play WITHOUT Uplay?
I really, don't want to support uplay or third party launcher. Is there a way to play it without the need for uplay? Maybe even a GoG release?

Well the issue comes down to what some customers want. I would say there is a decent portion that only want a single launcher, Steam. I personally have Steam that auto runs, the Blizzard launcher that auto runs, two separate Wargamming launchers that both auto run, and the Ubi launcher that only runs when I start it. That is already 3 launchers too many in my opinion but I require them to keep my games up to date and play them. Steam also loads up the FFXIV launcher.

I don't want any more launchers. I don't want the Bethesda launcher, I don't want the Origin launcher, and I don't want the GOG launcher. I don't care if there is this cool deal on a publishers other games, or a sale on these in game items, or some news piece about a game update. I will go to the specific websites for those activities. Games existed before launchers became a thing so i am reasonably sure that they do not require them now. I'm pretty sure pirated games don't require launchers....

I'm genuinely curious what exactly is wrong with uplay, i've never had issues with it so far. Is it because it's from ubisoft?

It's because A LOT of issues with steam+uplay cooperation. For example: I need to modify game files of Far Cry 3 just to get it started, because my uplay version is too new(!?) for steam and my game breaks.

So, I want game, that will work:
- via steam only
- via uplay only
- drm-free
- anything that will JUST WORK.

Well steam is technically the third party when it comes to ubisoft published games, so just get it on uplay then if you don't want both or any potential steam related problems. I know Steam has issues with MMO's pretty often too

Buy it on Uplay and start it without Steam
DRM free will only happen a year or so from now so dont sweat it.
And it will work to play from Uplay.

The UPlay / Steam integration is much better than before. I don't understand how people are having issues with this. I play Far Cry and other games from Ubi on here with no issues at all. If a launcher needs to update it updates itself and then I can play. I've been playing FC Tribal with no issues at all.

Unfortunately I do have two accounts b/c Steam created another one. Just make sure that Steam is connecting to the correct UPlay account and you won't have any issues. Also I've heard that Ubi will merge your accounts exactly ONCE if you ask nicely. There were some misunderstandings about how Steam and UPlay interacted and this resulted in multiple accounts being created.

Or Anno series. I bought them in Steam, so when I launch them, uplay starts and game starts too. But when I use uplay only, my game library shows me, that I own the game, but game market tries to sell me that game one more time. Now THAT is confusing for example.

Just buy it only in Uplay and you will have no issues. I have Anno 2070 in steam and now it's mine 3rd activation, so if i reinstall my OS i think this game will be lost. But Anno 1800 i will preorder with 20% discount for 100 uplay points and will have 0 problems with it in future i think. Yes steam got achievments and stuff like cards, but 20% discount is more solid to me.

+1 also, your game will never be lost, because even if you have your 3rd activation, because these activations will reset after some time (I think it was already after one month, don't remember anymore. I did reinstall already so many times on different computers. I had only just once a problem with the activation, and Ubisoft did fix that for me in one day.

Also as I written in a other post:
We all must be happy that these games are still on steam and not only to play on Uplay. But it’s these discussions about Uplay, that I don't understand that Ubisoft doesn't go the same way then EA did. So they don’t have to pay steam nothing anymore for releasing their games. I do understand that publishers want to make their own stores, because why pay steam so much, if you have a enough good games to make your own store. I have enough launcher, and they don’t bother me at all. I just launch them when I need them, that’s it, and I play the game.

I think you can try to do support request for more activations if you run out it numbers, but i have very bad experience with ubisoft support so just trying to evade this problem at all.
When i trying to start game from Uplay directly it's trying to launch steam, so it would not work without steam authorization

uplay isn't 3rd party, Steam is.

How are you going to play a online game requiring an online user account in which everything is saved via online connected servers without the online client?

You people loyal to a DRM platform are hilarious. Not only do you refuse to grasp basic organizational and technical concepts of products you bash because of ignorance, but the alligeince to 3rd party middle men as though they are superior to legit 1st party direct developer support in games is beyond sad.

It's not always wrong, steam does offer better customer protection than *some* alternatives. See what happened with Fallout 76 for example, they didn't release that on steam because then they'd have to refund that garbage game.

Though yes in this case there's nothing wrong with uplay, and the complaint is just silly. Steam is the 3rd party in this.
