Trade Unions slots - Expedition bonus?

There are people you can hire from the Trade Harbour's that slot in Trade Unions (among other buildings), but NOT your ship... that give Expedition bonus's?
How does that work? I can't slot the person in my ship to take on the expedition..

they will reside in a cargo slot during the expedition, if they are not slottable in a ship

If you keep them in cargo slot they will work during expedition. Same with material

Kind of crappy... as you need those slots for rations...etc. and to bring the loot back from the expedition. Oh well.

regarding the loot: only the loot found in those intermediate screens where you click through the things. the final bonus will always (well should) land in your trading post.

It's a trade off whether you want higher chances or do you want slot for some random chance for extra encounter rewards. You only need one slot for rations anyways. And usually you should be fine stacking important traits in the ship slots. So you can do a 3 skull expedition with 2 empty slots if you'd like
