Oil / electricity confusion
Can someone explain this to me ie how it works. I need oil to power electricity, but I need a tanker to transport the oil so I can "power" the supply, but to build a tanker in the steam shipyard requires electricity. I am assuming I have missed something in the process..

You can lay down an Oil Harbor in the ocean (No Oil Required), then run a railroad track from the Oil Harbor to the Oil Refinery and another rail track to the Power Station.

The Oil Harbor sends a train to the oil refinery which brings the oil back for storage and then sends a new one out to the power station.

If the oil fields are far away you can get clever with your tracks and run 1 track to the refinery and have a track coming out the other side of the refinery and that track seperate leading back to the oil harbor and connecting closer to the harbor.

You'll then have 2 tracks and no down-time from the trains coming and going to the oil fields, otherwise you can just do 1 track but you'll have to wait for the train to finish it's journey before another 1 gets sent out.

I would also recommend you place your starting oil production on a island with oil wells as doing this without any oil already being produced means you cannot ship oil there until you get it from somewhere else.

My oil refinery /depot / harbor are on another island separate from my main island with power station (my industry). I need to transport oil from the producing island to my main island to power my industry there, that's my problem.

Build a Oil Harbor on the island with the power station and use a boat to transfer the oil from one island to the next

Don't you need a tanker for that?

TO transport oil to any oil harbor you need a oil tanker for that. You need electricity to build it though. Also, you need to build steam engine to build steam powered boats. The steam engines are resource hungry and require electrical to build. Best to start your oil on an enriched island somewhere. The only other way is to buy a tanker from someone to get you started.

It's a catch 22 situation for me then.

Rather simple solution: Build the steam shipyard and other production requiring electricity on the oil-producing island and run the power plant off the local oil production. Then you just have to ferry in the other needed ressources to build the tanker, and possibly add commuter piers to get the workers from another island.
Once the tanker is built, you can tear it all down and transport the oil to where you actually want it.

Not that simple given the number of engineers required to do that. However have found that a trading partner has oil so problem looks solved.

How about charter lines?
Do they work?

when you drill the oil, you get a separate option to charter the oil which still requires oil tankers.

You can get those without electricity.

Can you make like a siding?

Did you try putting a buy order for oil? (No idea if this actually works)

Other suggestions: Try charter route. (Maybe this is why they exist?) and maybe try to buy an oil tanker from an NPC.
