Wtf with the balance? bug?
I had canned food at max for Artisans and their needs were fulfilled.
Suddenly canned food goes down without me adding more population in the last 30 minutes of gameplay... why? they're suddenly starting to get fatter for winter or what? I don't get this game sometimes.

And what is it with the balance going from 3000 to -1000 when my population doesn't even move?

Did you accidently allow your canned foods to be bought by npc's? That is really my only guess.

Are you sure it's canned food and not rum?

I didn't, I added another canned food production line and it seems to be stable for now, kind of weird.

I don't understand how some players have a balance of 9-10k when everytime I reach 3-4k I need to build more production (because more population) and new buildings which add more maintenance cost.

Canned food is for Engineers also. Did you add them? Did a factory blow up? Check, why it goes down. Enough meet? Enough sweet pepper? Koal? Check the whole production chain. There is a reason for it. This is not a bug.

You're probably right, but how can you know that it's not a bug?

I've encountered way too many bugs in this game (3+ broken missions, ships ignoring commands/not firing, broken UI displaying garbage text, events not triggering, missing items from my inventory) and it wouldn't surprise me that the population consumption could increase without reason.
