New or Old World transporting characters and items

I know how to move goods by charter NW OWorld and vice versa,
How does one transport characters and items between the worlds

U just manually put the characters and items onto any of your ships. Click on the ship, its card has button move to new region right next to button to set it on patrol. Then drop them off at the port of choice after they get there.

But if you send a ship from Old world to New world, can you get them back to Old world or vice versa?

Yes, just hit the button again send to new region.
