Sorry - nub. Need help.
I just recently started and I have a couple basic questions. Tried searching for help but I'm not really sure of the correct search terms.

I've played a few of the Annos in the past and much of this game is similar. I sent out a ship and settled a nearby island because it had some things I needed. Now unless my memory is totally broken, in past games, you settled the new island, build industries and they just magically got workers, probably from your main island. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore. So does that mean you've got to cultivate a full population starting with farmers and workers and advancing them through all of the upper classes, and providing them with all their needs just so that you can create high level stuff on that island??

When you get to 500 engineers, you can build commuter piers which are an absolute godsend because the workforce is shared between whichever islands have them.

As far as I know this is only possible in the Old World, but still it's great.

Thanks for that info. So it sounds like prior to engineers, settling new islands is kind of a waste of time?

Not a waste of time. I just wouldn't put anything besides farmer/workers on a satellite island. The main reason you'll settle other islands is because of fertility and rock/mineral mines, which you do need prior to engineers. Farmers and workers take care of both of those.

Later on, when you link the islands with a commuter pier, you'll be able to make your main island primarily Artisans, Engineers, and Investors while the farmers and workers are on another (or several) island.

I'm really short on clay with only two clay pits on my starting island. Right across the bay is another island with 4 pits. But to harvest that clay, I'm going to have to set up a whole colony with marketplace, farmers, a clothing industry, fisherman, etc., etc., and everything I need to support those two classes of workers, solely to get some bricks, right?

Yes. It shouldn't be too hard though. You just need a market place, fish, and clothes. Pub would be good too so they don't get mad.

2 clay pits on the main island produces 4 bricks/minute. You do have two brick factories per pit right (4 brick factories total).

You could also just buy them from Sir Archibald Blake.
