Cannot find cotton plantation building
Forums online say its in the sails production tree but I see nothing in that. I click sails I see sheep farm and sail maker. Where should I be looking?

cotton plantation is new world exclusive.
you have to look at sail making in a new world port.

Sail production in the New World not the old.

So another island, build a sail maker?

So where visually will I see the option to build a cotton plantation? How do I get to that point?
I have a sail maker on another island. When I click sailmaker on the build bar - it shows only sheep farm and sail maker, is this where the cotton plantation is supposed to be?

New world, not a new island in the old world. Cotton dosen't grow anywhere in the old world.

I don't understand what new world means.

Everyone keeps mentioning "new world' but don't explain what the hell it is.

when you are doing your first expedition you will reach the New World (South America), where you can set up cotton plantations

I had no clue of this.. does it matter if you fail the expedition or not?

I am not sure. Normally you should be able to do it again after a little time

exactly. The mission will reappear until it is finished successfully. And only after that, all the other expditions start to appear.

Yes, the mission should keep reappearing eventually. Load a good ship (preferably with lots of slots) according to the captain's recommendations (e.g., if it says "diplomacy likely," pick and slot an item with a high diplomacy rating. Or hunting, or navigation, or force, or faith, etc.) Pick one 50t stack of rations to keep your crew morale up (beer works best at that point; bread's also good, too).

Once you complete it the New World map unlocks and it will put you smack dab in it. I forget if it already picks an island for you or gives you a ship loaded with supplies to start a colony on an island. If you want to start with cotton make sure you pick an island that has cotton fertility! (Tip: Also look for sugar cane (for rum) and coffee fertility. You will need them pretty soon to satisfy your already-existing Old World residents.) You shouldn't have to build up the island much before cotton unlocks.

From there you can send your ships back and forth between the New World and the Old World.

Note only sailmakers set up in the New World even need cotton. The ones you can build in the old world simply use wool from the sheep farm.

Honestly cotton fabric spinning should be a old world industry. Cotton Production a new world activity.
