Extremely Annoying Sound

I'm playing Anno 1800 after traveling for a few weeks. Now I am hearing an extremely annoying sound that I cannot identify with anything that is happening in-game. It sounds like an alert of some sort, something I've never heard before.

Does anyone know what I am talking about and, more importantly, does anyone know how to turn if off?

Is it the clicking noise that happens when an a notification pops up in the upper left? I know it's made upon completing quests.
