Check out Sigil. It's made by John Romero, it's great. Also Doom Slayer Chronicles is pretty good.

Ok, I have to confess that I'm just getting back playing the original Doom versions after about a 20 year hiatus. I've downloaded all the steam versions but I found an old CD with many wads called D!zone. I've found the steam directory that holds all the wads for Master Levels of Doom II. Could I just dump all/most/some of the wads from 20 years ago into that directory so that I could just use the Master Levels menu to play them? If not what would I have to do to make it work? Thanks to all you Doom Experts....

Hocus Doom is pretty great, although its a total conversion, based on a fairly unknown apogee game from the same era, hocus pocus.

As someone who REALLY likes hocus pocus, i love hocus doom, for a first timer, its still a great time.

Doom 2 The Way ID did.

Those are basicly new mapset made with the original design philosophy in mind. Totally worth playing.

Try making one on DoomBuilder or Slade3. Then you don't have any problems that are unfixable...
