How to level up quickly in the early game?

Title says it all. I'm tired of getting my ass kicked by woodland creatures. (I'm currently level 15.) How do I build up my adorable little dog and cat so they can tear up the whole kingdom?

I'd look for any optional missions or find monsters that are higher level than mine and get them away from others so i can beat them up safely, it is what worked for me.

The magic wands or huhhhh, however they're called are pretty useful for this, shooting while keeping your distance and dodging will get higher leveled monsters down in no time.
