Why does my cat PC have half the health of the dog PC?

Playing the Switch version... not sure if this is a bug or I did something wrong. The cat PC's health is capped at 50%, and does not seem to be affected by changing/unequipping gear/spells.

(Also, if any dev ends up reading this, I just wanna say it was a really good idea for you, at least in my case, to put the first game in a Humble Bundle. I never would have looked twice at either game, but I gave the first one a shot, and fell in love enough to grab the sequel ASAP.)

Equiping a staff reduces a lot the HP.

You probably equiped a staff. You can try testing it by keeping your eye on your hp bar and then switch to a sword.

Look at your equip at all. there are also equips which reduce hp and some which increase it,....
