Ok so how do you make a camp fire?

Hit B to bring up the build menu, basic and more permanent fire should be there on the first tab. It will tell you what you need in your inventory to build them.

Make sure you have branches in your inventory, not sticks. The 'better' version of the campfire requires about 6 stones in addition to the branches. I haven't noticed much of a difference between the basic version (a pile of sticks) and the more advanced version in terms of burning time. The burn duration on the basic fire is generally more than adequate to carry out whatever you need to do.

Note that you cannot use barrel fires for cooking; those serve purely as illumination.

Im using the barrel fires for cooking. You just need to put a grill on top of it.

^Really? I've never actually tried that. I wasn't able to position a cooking pot over one, but I'll take your word for it until I get a chance to try it myself.
