So am I supposed to wander around until I find proper tools to start being able to build things with?
I feel like there is a whole bunch of stuff that I am overlooking but I have clicked on everything and can't seem to find what I am needing for the startup. Lemme put it this way, I need item no. 1, to make item no. 1 I need item no. 2 which means that I need item no. 3 to gather item no. 2. There is no option to make item no. 3 so i can't, in turn, gather item no. 2 to use in making item no. 1.. I must be overlooking something.
But if you're talking about crafting a axe then you already can!
If this is not what you're talking about then my bad i can't understand you!
Found a workbench.. I knew I was missing something, that's how you craft a saw. And I was needing a saw to craft wood to use to make an axe. Yes, I was talking about making an axe. This game seems very disjointed. >.>
There is a spawed workbench (Blue building on the main road) and a spawned smith/anvil (Next to the farm house) already in the game also, so you do have what you need to craft these items. However its MUCH easier to loot (which is a main game mechanic) and use the loot to do what you want.
The map is relatively small, and so having a "small base" where you cant do anything isnt really an excuse, explore, loot, scavange.
Finding them laying around is cool and useful but say you are wandering around for a few hours and can't find a saw, like I did, you would have spent all that time looking for a lucky drop when you should have been able to make it far far more quickly on your own.
Say hypothetically, if you have the capacity to craft your own tools you wouldn't have to go from cabin to cabin and subject yourself to fighting zombies and not have to chance hitting the zombie time and again for it not to register because, I don't know, the game registered it as you hitting the door frame or w/e, this has also happened to me.. and you get knocked out and lose a bunch of your stuff.
You should be able to make your own workbench, you shouldn't have to hope that there is one already setup for you all convenient like. I understand that it's early access, these type of things are hardly smoothed out by early access time, I'm just saying that the basic crafting abilities are very limited and should be expanded upon.
I mean I shouldn't need a crafting station to make a basic woven fiber and branch bow, or the arrows for that matter. Or a campfire, that should be like one of the first few things that you can make, maybe I overlooked it but I couldn't find anything in my basic crafting stuff that had anything to do with building a campfire.
Let's be honest here, if you were thrust into this situation today, you wouldn't be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around trying to make an axe or a saw, you'd be hoping and praying you find one in that empty shack by the road because that's reality.

But you don't need a saw if you have an axe.
Wrong.
You don't need iron or steel to make tools. Any survivalist or any tribe in S America or even Africa knows that to be true.
It doesn't take that long, at all. It's a matter of minutes to hours.
Not necessarily.
Also, it's stupid to need a workbench for basic weapon such as bow and arrow.

No civilization in history has ever required one. Well, except for the one in 2018 during an apocalypse apparently.
This game you run around and loot at the beginning. You can find mulitples of everything. House's to make as base etc.
As it is the characters walk/run like someone very overweight that is probably about a donut or two away from a heart attack. Though I do like being able to run as fast backwards as I can forwards, that's a nice touch.
If it's focused around running around and finding stuff then why have a crafting portion at all? Why are there rocks everywhere if I have no use for them? (on a side note why do I constantly feel that there is a yeti up on the hills above me throwing rocks at me and barely missing every single time?)
I'm sure that the developer hasn't fully filled out the crafting stuff situation. I'm sure they'll get around to it but it seems weird to be able to drive cars around but not be able to make a stone axe..
