DO NOT EVER BUILD AT THE GAS STATION
Being actually in and on top of the station is nice, but anytime you need to go out, say to get some water, you are taking the risk of being killed by the bears. It gets very annoying very fast. PS. Zombies also can spawn on top of the gas station. I've seen it twice already.
I dont suppose it matters too much unless the bandits looting our camps gets reactivated- I was thinking about moving everything of value to the gas station and building a fence there- so it is good to know that the bear spawn points make that useless too.
Im not quite sure what to do now there is a cabin on fairly flat ground across the road and up the hill quite a way- but I have a lot of gear to shift its going to be tedious.
Why on earth dont the fences work on uneven ground- they dont clip to each other either.
Wow... you ask a question then rant at people who answer it.
The petrol station isnt one of the devs pre-marked bases so Ive no idea why you assume the dev intended it to be a base. In fact the it has a spawn point inside its fenced area seems to suggest it isnt meant to be a base.
It is also unclear why you assume "we" are not hunting bear. You can hunt bear without setting up home in their den! Its nice to be able to choose when you hunt rather than have the decision thrust upon you when you have other stuff you want to do... there is a huge map to explore after all.
It can be a pain to have to waste ammo and kill yet another bear when you already have plenty of salted meat and nowhere to hang the extra or not enough salt to salt it.
Because now you can build your own big houses (Hunting Cabins A, B, C) you can choose to build at any place you like.
Alternative bases are everywhere in this case. 😉
If you prefer to be in the middle of the map, then you should take a look at Doctor_Dentist's Map here on website at "Guides" and so build your own House at the left side of the big lake...
Its not entirely true you can build anywhere, it needs to be flat enough. It can be tricky to tell that as well because the green outline is half built after you place it- so as you wander around it after its a bit hard to be sure its on the ground all the way around (obviously its a top down view as you place it).
There are a few places that are nice and flat but many tend to be quite near the pre-made bases.
I did shift my stuff up to the pre-made cabin on the hill to the east of the petrol station and motel. Its a bit of a trek for water (not too bad if you have a pile of bottles- Im considering carrying the water barrel down and filling it completely at the lake- but it feels a bit like a cheating idea LOL), its not far to hunt bear and zombies. It is a huge flat area to build on.
So far I have added a few more small huts and cabins, and a blacksmiths. Im still working on a big cabin and of course the fence. It such a big area to build you can easily ignore the pre-made cabin and still fit a base there.
