I found early on in the game until you get walls built that gives you a buffer from zombies, I slept in the water tower, almost always use white house as base since it is real close to water and middle of the main road. Once I had placed fences on windows and around front door I would be able to sleep uninterrupted at night. I don't do much outside at night due to infected and wanting to keep my fatigue level maxed.

I have yet to have any spawn on top of my cabin... occasionally on my wooden walls, but never on my cabin itself.

Might I recommend crafting a bed to sleep in?

I found that your character sleeps better in a bed with less interruption vs sleeping bag or simply sleeping on the ground/floor... even for a regular cabin like the one near the autoshop on the west side of the map.

Once you get woken up... simply go back to sleep and ignore the infected Z's. You can always use an hour or two during the evening to kill and farm infected while using a couple hours during the day to sleep.

I've had them spawn on top of the white house, inside the walls surrounding the white house, sometimes even inside the house itself. They aren't really limited except by radius around the player.. though I think the developer is working on that. The other really bad thing is having NPCs walking in/out of your wall/house gates constantly, leaving doors open for the infected to run through at will. Hopefully that's on the radar for fixing as well.

where's your base?

I hope the developer is working on this. Having zombies spawn inside what should be walled of safe areas is, for me personally, the #1 most annoying thing currently. In fact, I've lost interest in play for now because of it.

we must remember 'the saw mill', is where infected originally spawn inside the walls ..

safe places where they wont spawn into are the ones where a 'home base' can be set ..

some players complain about infected spawning in the 'white house', but choose to build towers there, and go to sleep in them, then complain about infected spawning inside the white house's protection gates they built ..
forgetting that the infected spawn within 50 feet of their position ..
regardless if they (the survivor) are inside the base perimeter .. if they are up in the tower, the infected will spawn around the house inside the perimeter, because they are 'above it' ..

~little things like this matters
