They released a short story novel, they haven't forgotten about us!

There isn't much to discuss, so I wouldn't worry about that part. Most people who were interested before probably still have it in their wishlists and will be notified when, or if, there is an actual release. Relax and realize that hype and engagement aren't all that relevant for niche games like this :-)
Like, think about it, a massive studio like Larian, for example, only works on a single game for years to make sure it's good, they don't just start throwing out new projects, yet Sukeban is such a small team by comparison and they're doing just that.
I'd like to know how much is actually done. We know the lead writer has been OOC for awhile, what about the art assets? The mechanics? Everything else beyond the writing?
Because changing writer halfway through the job never went wrong at all lol
I agree that there should be a decision about the continuation of the project most likely but changing the original writer for someone else is just not a good idea. Better to scratch whatever they have until that point and start anew.
I doubt is going to be completely canceled ever giving the creative nature of both main authors, but certainly won't expect anything in a year or two for N1RV Ann-A, they have been very clear, both on the mentioned last blog post and the one from 2020 where the release date changed to "WID" (when it's done) https://sukeban.moe/index.php/2020/12/01/nirvana-delay-en/#more-526
Basically, the next time there's an actual update/game trailer, is likely that it comes with a less ambiguous release date, but it for sure is gonna take more time to happen, even if it will eventually happen for sure.
It's way more complicated that for a small indie studio that has six devs, and it's kind of untrue that the only problem is and was depression, they faced a lof of challenges with the state of their home country (which I dunno if it has changed since then).
On 2019 at the Tokyo Game Show and PAX West there was a 10-15 minute demo of the game, which probably isn't representative of all the work they had until then, since only two characters appear. This same demo (I believe) was shown on PAX East 2020, which happened around March 2020.
The developers have been weirdly defensive on Reddit when it comes to people not caring about “Project D” - which is a huge red flag because it seems like they aren't actually working on N1RV at all.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they're still strumming away at it. I hope I am. But something tells me this studio jumped ship on the sequel long ago.
