WORLD OF HORROR

WORLD OF HORROR

I REALLY wish we could turn off the music, or at least lower it.
It's very loud and, at least for me, completely ruins the atmosphere. I'm a huge Junji Ito fan and I'd never imagine listening to that type of music while reading his work. I understand the retro appeal but it just doesn't work with a creepy point-and-click game. And it's very loud.

I wish I could just keep SFX on and turn off the music.:sleepyjill:

yeah i think the music is great but i do feel it kinda ruins the atmosphere as well. i think the game would be more creepy and scarier if the music was very minimal, lowered or just happened in certain areas or situations (like flashback: quest for identity).

Surely, when the game becomes steamworks, it can be done.

I disagree, I think the music is part of the charm of this game, I'd never imagine I'd love such contrast between chill and suspenseful moments, along with some surprisingly exciting battle themes. This is not a Junji Ito's work, in fact I don't listen to music like this while reading his stuff, but this game is just inspired by it, while at the same time is its own thing and I appreciate the approach it was given.

About your actual complain, yeah I bet you will be able to do that in the future, maybe soon cause 0.9.18 seems to be a modding update

I agree with Lars, the music in this game is probably one of the best atmospheres I have felt in a horror game. Maybe because I'm oversaturated with the "ooo spooky!! silent!!!"

Idk, maybe because in Spanish "Horror" is a sub-genre of "Terror", centered less in trying to scare the viewer, but more on using shock/creepy imagery.
This game is made by someone living on Poland, so maybe they also have two words for that too

Back on topic, I personally feel like the music in World of Horror is more about expressing a "You are on death's door, trying to survive until the door opens" which is reflected in the gameplay aswell

This is achieved by dividing the soundtrack distribuiton on various phases

Deep breath, cigarrete break, break until who knows when:

Fear, venturing onto unknown territory, unsettling, and etc on investigation phase:

Adrenaline. Panic. Stress. Danger -- on combat phase

then it smoothly transitions to the investigation phase, which now has another meaning
instead of "fear to the unknown", not knowing what to expect, it's more about being afraid of it happening again.
If it does happen again, you have the combat theme again, until you finally reach the "Deep breath" theme again. The "Home Sweet Home".

Maybe your immersion is ruined by your own expectatives, because this game really doesn't do a bad job at all when it refers to communicating an atmosphere.
If seaside OST isn't your favorite, don't worry, since this exact formula applies to every single song from the game

From the dusty mansion halls

To the unsettling eyes of the apartment corridors

Maybe even the eerieness of an empty school.

Or the wind dancing between the tree landscape of the so rumoured forest.

No matter which area we talking about, they're all valid on bringing a great atmosphere to the scene.
It's true, I woulnd't read a Junji Ito manga with the World of Horror OST, but I wouldn't play World of Horror with any other song.

The music actually hurts. I have a headache. I'm sure on a good day you could convince me that it's worth it for the horror to fully do it's thing, but right now, I just feel like garbage, and I want to enjoy the game, and I have to turn the whole volume off because the music is giving me tinnitus. There's even a volume setting for the music that don't do nothin'. Is that part of the design? To drive you nuts? Or is it just not working yet?
