Character secrets

Seems like all the characters have some dark secrets in their past. What are they, or what do you speculate they are if the game is very vague about things?

Kirie: She has tried to use her ghost detecting powers to contact her dead parents. It never works.

Aiko: Barely survived an encounter with a ghost that nearly drowned her. This isn't even some hidden thing in the game, it is directly stated to be her motive to fight against the supernatural. Other then this she seems normal.

Mizuki: Something really bad happened to her in the past relating to her being an idol. It seems vague if it is something supernatural or if it was a more mundane, but still horrible, hazard that a young woman could face in the shady world of entertainment.

Kouji: Just a guy. No real dark secret, he's just an intrepid reporter.

Haru: He and some fellow gangsters suffered a run in with a monster. Haru was the only survivor.

Mimi: A Perfectly Normal Girl. :)

Miku: A punk thriving in the chaos the town is suffering. Encountered by other characters as an enemy.

Moriko: I think her dad might have killed her mom. Something strange is going on there.

Yashiro: His letter is a big Silent Hill 2 reference so I think it's possible he murdered his sister.

Ayaka: Accidentally killed her friends in a magic ritual.

Toshiaki: No real secret, his deal is explained in his character description. Stole the Necronomicon from a bunch of cultists and is on the run.

Juri: Being stalked by a magical entity that will eventually catch her.

Yumiko: As is a common feature in a lot of these characters I think she might be responsible for her brother's death and is repressing the memory.

Here's a hot one: Yumiko *was* her brother. The sister was thrown off a cliff and the brother assumed her identity. Thus "he" is now "missing".

Oh yeah, that could be the case. Some of Yumiko's unique scenes imply something of that nature. That would be an interesting twist. Seems like a difficult thing to pull off, but most of the characters are implied to be living alone for whatever reason as they investigate the town, so "Yumiko" might have run away after their sisters death which would help with the masquerade.

The other possibility is that Yumiko murdered a classmate and took their place? Maybe the brother found out and needed to be silenced?

With Mizuki, it's all but stated that her idol contract is a "deal with the literal devil" scenario... which isn't far off from the real horrors a young idol will likely face in the industry.

Mimi is fine and totally normal, aside from being a biology obsessed masochist.

Miku is just a delinquent trying to make the best of a bad situation; she's willing to do all the wrong things for the right reasons. Unlocking her requires explicitly seeing that.

There are vague implications that Juri's entire family line is cursed so that they all live on borrowed time. The achievement title for being possessed calls the entity the "real" one, though, so it's possible that Juri is something like a changeling and the spirit of the child she was swapped with is out for vengeance; its experiences in the spirit world/land of the fae have left it too broken to mentally or physically grow anymore after it's had its revenge, so it dumbly adopts Juri's goals anyways.

Ooh, I surprisingly haven't given much thought to lore in this game. All I know is Mimi creeps me the hell out and I'm not sure why.
