I kinda understand they are releasing in Japan and decided to ditch the Ito lookalike to be safe, but why uglify the female cast? Was he simply pissed off with having to change some art for a console release at the last minute?
Have the Gruesome Altar been found too gruesome?
At least we have some real horror in the game now)
I think the Dev should add a toggle for the art. That way, people can freely switch between the old/new. Just a thought.
But if he did steal/traced the art and didn't give people the credit they deserved, I can understand why he ended up changing the art.
from another post in another thread
"I know several people very negative towards this game for years now because of accusations about how it stole/traced art from several tumblrs without ever crediting them (the fact that all the new art is so much worse will probably add fuel to that particular fire) so it is not impossible that some of these substitutions might not be unrelated to said accusation"
So, who knows.
People speculate that the artwork redo is his actual talent shown front and center as to avoid the (potentially massive) exposure from the console + Chinese release that is coming on the 26th. This way, hundreds of thousands of people don't recognize the stolen art anymore and none are the wiser.
I understand that the developer wanted to avoid accusations of tracing Junji ito's art....but with all the money he has gotten over the years one would think he would do the decent thing and actually hire a proper artist to make the portraits instead of giving them off to
the typical "someone who will do it for less" .
You don't need to be a five-star chef to know your steak is raw
Or to know when you were never served at all, for that matter.
Not the best way to avoid tracing controversy (and the incongruity with Aiko and Mizuki just bothers me, if you're gonna make it jank make it uniformly jank dammit)
Still think I'll enjoy this game like I did before, but man am I glad I got it on sale
The biggest issue (and what I'm guessing set off most people) is that the updated character art is first experienced by the player on a screen (home interior) where you can also still see an example of the older art at the same time (thus forcing a juxtaposition of style and quality).
Aiko's "at home" full body shot (with new art) is visible at the same time her profile is visible (featuring the old art)
Mizuki is quite the same, but reversed - wherein her profile image is using the new art while her full body shot is using the old.
Keep in mind both of these characters have existed in one form or another since the earliest game-jam builds from late 2016/early 2017 (even before the TGS demo), so anyone that's spent time with this game KNOWS how they look.
The 'new' art has wildly distinct and different facial features/designs, along with inconsistent body shapes when compared to the older art. In turn, your eye catches the differences immediately and then you instinctively look at the comparison images available on the very same screen.
