The multiple ways of actually killing it, aka using your brain and strategy, have long since been patched out; so now, killing it and other mega enemies is just a waste of time and resources.
I'm returning to this game after not playing for roughly a year, and that appears to be the only mystery I can do.
I tried saving afterwards, but I got some sort of error.

So, now I'm trying to do the mission again. Is there any advice you can give me? I'm struggling with my reason (currently at 4) and I thought you could go home to rest, but I don't see that option, nor any other option such as recruit students or visit the hospital.
Apparently, the old guy is some sort of hungry spider dude, and I am suffering from a broken jaw. It currently says the seed is 1063 (though I swear it was a three number seed earlier)
Reason at 4 is a tough one. if you have 2 funds, you can buy some medicine at the pharmacy in the hospital for a doom increase. 2 funds for 2 reasons.
I also got that stupid error when I tried to save earlier, at this point it's just safer to leave the game running in the background rather than save/quit.
Edit: They're called Prescription Pills and heal 2 reason. Pain Meds heal 4 health and cause you to lose 2 reason.
I go for the latter option unless I've randomed the Knight-Errant backstory. You still get the bonus XP for "through investigating" just for getting the two books, not for messing with the speakers.
Also, I'm not very good at this game, but trying my best. Is it at all possible to use spells and not screw yourself over? I tried using the first character, that gets a random spell, but it's so hard recovering your health in the game for me.
Generally speaking, ending A for any of the mysteries is the "good" end, where there's the least amount of lasting damage and the most people saved. And Household Horror (where Oetaru appears) is no different in that respect. In exchange for one of your friend's lives, you put the beast to rest again and prevent it from terrorizing the entire coastline starting with the city. Further, because you now know what it takes to wake the thing and arn't being actively pursued, you have the time to destroy the equipment in the cave to prevent it's summoning in the future.
Is it an ideal ending? No, but against a lovecraftian horror like that sometimes "good enough" is the best you can hope for. Such is a common theme in this style of literature.
As for spells, they're situational at best. The Seals are worth casting if you're trying to build into the stat they're offering, STR or KNW. Book of Gore becomes a very strong heal if you combine it with Unearthly Suture (or the School Nurse) to remove whatever wound it gives you (Except broken Jaw, obviously). Thread of Fate or Ashen Contract can be good emergency buttons for bosses you're not confident in being able to beat without taking a ton of extra damage, like Aka Mantou or the Dream Devourer. These are all unlock spells and on the rare side in the pool; most common spells arn't worth the space they take up and are best used to heal a single point of reason by forgetting them.
