Is this game based heavily around RNG of getting what you need to progress? The baseball bat was my own fault for not searching the lockers, but the healing (Besides cauterize) was random. And I also happened not to hit any big encounters that drained my stamina.
Also, are the perks broken in the tutorial? I got the anatomy room event and then the black doll event in that order and the black doll event said I needed the "anatomy room perk" which I assumed I'd get from that event but wouldn't let me use it? Have I just failed some roll in teh anatomy room every single time I got it?
That's an extreme microcosm of the game as well as it is actually a minority to how most of the quests are in the game.
If you're having trouble with it I recommend you check out some of the guides that have been created and posted online.
One of the things I suggest is actually playing on the easier difficulty as well and playing through the quickplay over and over again but really the game can be conquered specializing in one particular stat that benefits your character and one weapon. Not really a downside but just a way to get through the game. Everyone gets their own groove to the games flow.
The game is really more or less at its base level core a card and dice game and once you find out how the game works in its flow that level you're in wont give you much trouble.
Sorry if this doesnt help much but like I said the tutorial is a real microcosm and its actually one of the harder levels to get through because its a garaunteed boss fight at the end.
I just hope it doesnt deter you from playing the game more as I find it to be an excellent game and recommend it frequently.
No, although it is confusing
The "tutorial" is just one of the in game investigations specifically "Spine-Chilling Story of School Scissors"
You earn perks from leveling up, often by completing previous investigations
This means that while several events require perks in the "tutorial", it is effectively impossible to get enough combat encounters to level up to earn a perk within the tutorial
Another tip in general is just run away from enemies you think you can't beat without taking massive damage or dying. Sure you get a doom penalty but 5% doom is better than game over
Also, notice that "prepare attack" and "boost" must be used differently depending on the situation. Sometimes it's more cost effective to use multiple boosts than a prepare and vice versa. Pay attention to your chances to hit and decide accordingly. For example, fighting a high powered enemy with an inaccurate weapon will likely call for more prepared strong attacks supplemented by several weaker strikes.
And of course, since you're going up against tons of eldritch horrors, it's not always a good idea to stay and fight. Think about how many turns you can spend fighting an enemy before before they knock your stamina or reason down to dangerous levels. If it's not going your way, better to just suck up the penalty to doom.
And finally, don't forget this is a roguelike. You won't win every run and that's fine.
Hope this helps.
