Haru starting addiction any way to deal with it other than smoking?
I was just wondering is there any way for Haru to kick the habit to lose that debuff or is more of less a character quirk you can't eliminate?

Haven't tried it yet, but have you checked to see if the doctor can do something about it?
Red-Rain Feb 23, 2020 @ 1:40pm
Doctor can't treat it I already took a crack at it and it seems to be treated the same as bringing a curse in there.
does Save & Quit's purge traits remove it?

Seems like every save I try with Haru crashes the game so doesn't look like that is an option.

You can temporary remove it by buying extra cigarettes (only after a store unlock, as far as I know), but yeah, that's something you have to manage

Use that starting cigarette carefully

The Nicotine traits combined with Coughing Blood for lighting up the first time as they currently are pretty much hobbles his ability to succeed in a game frankly. This guy is supposed to be a Yakuza gangster who probably got into a few fights before and he's less effective in combat than the swimming captain, with his inability to attack and defend at the same time.

Ooof yeah thats why I was afraid of I know you can do the refresh to get cigs but seems like quite a big downside to the character with no upside to the addiction beside the perks of the item itself. Seems like he needs a big upside to having what is a constant axe over his head with little to show for it perhaps you know a weapon or better stats given the mob background plus the xp of said background.

The only real downside of Haru is that STR weapons are really weak. At least the ones I've managed to find - neither bat nor fireman's axe nor cleaver are that amazing. Carpenter's Hammer + aimed strikes is so much better than all of them that it's not even funny. Not to mention Katana, even though it's a rare find.

Outside of that, his price reduction perks and +1 to all damage perks are pretty strong.

I suppose the shovel might be good if you are in a pinch for funds although might not be worth it seeing he can only do like one swing with the thing.

The problem is the speed penalties from his nicotine habit (and -4 DEX for Coughing Blood) means he'll be guaranteed to take damage in combat when healing might end up a premium because of an Old God Event. The other two characters so far have been able to manage a combination of attack and defense (usually Dodge, because Brace For Impact is just too damn expensive if you don't want to just turtle). Plus the likelhood of picking up Injuries means a character meant to be a rough hood will end up having to cut and run from everything to be able to make it long in a game.

Will agree that Str weapons are pretty bad in general

Why do that when you can get Cursed Scissors and hit harder and faster, or Hammer and capitalize on it's benefits

Will say he's the weakest character of the bunch but still possible to win with, although you may be focusing on other stats outside of Str

Yeah I've cleared one go with him and think outside getting the cig extra item I'd rather go with the swimmer after managing to clear her storyline in one shot unlike with the thug. If there was ever anything to purge the addiction he would be quite a bit better but at least with his decent stat spread getting allies and things for skill checks seems to be one way to sure up the lacking combat speed short of a smoke. A small change to the cigs to be a multiuse item for break, or a puff during combat akin to a combat stim would go quite a way rather than the current constant smoke till it's gone thing.

Another possible way to have balanced him would have been for him to have a passive perk or ability where he has a chance to not consume cigarettes upon use (to reflect the fact that as a pre-existing smoker, they are already a part of his regular expenses unlike the others for whom it would be a new habit they're picking up on top of everything else in their lives until this point) or to have him get a 'free' pack every mystery (making him the only character to have a 'free' way to overcome the downsides of smoking, again, to reflect that this is a pre-existing habit he's likely had for years now).

As it stands, him having cigarettes is actually a penalty on top of strength arguably being the worst stat in the game (while he does have solid perks specific to him I would argue that the random nature of which perks you get upon level up along with the fact that the way investigations can pan out could result in you getting very few perks and as a result never really benefiting from them).

Would also be cool if you could get random events where you could bum a cig off a friendly stranger. With a flip side of an event where the opposite happens and you're given the chance to give away a cig to a stranger for say...maybe some XP? Or even a point of reason just for doing something generous?

I would go so far as to argue that Haru - in his current state - is actually hobbled enough that one could conceivably 'balance' him by giving him a revolver at the start of the game, as well a a few (probably only 3-6) bullets for it.

1. The weapon's raw shooting power would mean that, while Haru can typically only squeeze out one attack per turn, that attack would *hurt* and cause severe damage; Especially to low-level foes. The limited ammunition mechanic, however, would mean that Haru would either need to eventually swap to pistol-whipping attacks or else scrounge more bullets from the (very) few sources of such to be found in-game.

2. Actually *starting* with a firearm would make Haru's CQC perk (which increases the base damage of pistol-whip attacks) a lot more attractive of an option.

3. If, by chance, Haru's play progression should mean that - for whatever reason - that he goes with another, more mundane weapon, over using his revolver, then it would at least leave him with the option to *sell/pawn* his revolver, instead, and net an extra 5 funds for the loss of it.

3. Yes, I know that the setting is Japan and that firearms are generally highly-illegal and even semi-taboo as far as the general public is concerned in Japanese law, but, then again Haru is supposed to be a former *criminal*, after all. If *any* character is justified in starting with a firearm item, it would be him.
