Roguelite?
One of the reviews calls this a roguelite? Is that true? That would be a no buy. :(

Sort of depends on what that (very) broad term means to you. What parts of that term do you dislike gameplay-wise?

I think permadeath is the only thing i do not like anymore. :)
So, how does saving/loading work in this game?

Well, yes, you can lose in this game. There do appear to be permanent unlocks between runs if you earn in-game Achievements.

My 2cents - the term 'roguelite' hardly comes to mind when I play this. I think there are _far_ better, more specific, descriptors. I think 'unique'. I think 'story driven'. I think 'somewhat puzzle-like'. That's just my 2cents.

I'm not trying to sell you on this. This is quite niche. I'm just saying I wouldn't let that overly-used term bog you down. You can always refund. You'd know exactly if you want it well within 2 hours. Plus there is a demo on Itch.

I don't know if you can save scum. I do know there is a save function.

It's not a rogue-anything, it's a completely different type of game.

It's a Choose Your Own Adventure kind of a game. A legit (but different) genre, even if it's rooted mostly in tabletop.

I would say it's more of a short horror stories randomizer, and while it has elements of a roguelite game, you can still play it on the easy difficulty and just enjoy the story.

was about to say this,

If I had to describe it at all, I'd say it's an RPG/dungeon crawler, except without any map or dungeon, just distilled to the encounters. Or maybe one of those niche gameboy rpgs that got released only in Japan with unusual mechanics.

The term roguelite is quite fitting. Permadeath (but when you play you unlock more events cards) and random-generated events that force you to make risk-reward decisions trying to balance the time left (Doom), your health (stamina) and your sanity (reason).

In a certain way, it has similarities with FTL (one of the first games that pushed the term roguelite), but this game is much more narrative and less micromanagement.

each playthrough its around 1 to 2 hours so permadeath its hardly something to be bothered.

Yeah, I agree. It is definitively not a rogue-like, since it is closer to CYOA / point-and-click in gameplay, but shares a lot of design markers of a rogue-lites.

So it is safe to say that if someone does not like those elements (perma-death, content unlocked through multiple gameplays, randomized content, etc.), they will not enjoy this game very much.

In terms of the game having you do fresh runs over from start when you fail, having randomized elements and mechanics and items who's uses and quirks aren't fully explained immediately and thus requiring a certain level of experimentation and trial and error to fully understand the value of, yes, you could call this game a roguelike.

However, I would probably say that it has a lot more in common with the Arkham Horror tabletop game (that it clearly takes a lot of influence from) and actually reminds me a lot more of the old Fighting Fantasy books, so while it does share a few mechanics and concepts from Roguelikes I wouldn't say it would be fair to sum the game up as that genre.
