Nowadays, with the current advancements in the Unreal Engine and the way it's handling animations etc, and the advancements in AI, there is a silver lining on the horizon that maybe, just maybe, there might be a way to develop the game further using the most advanced technologies.
However, last that I saw we're still not quite there yet. Keep an eye out for AI 3d creation and animation and you'll see some astounding things that are possible today - just not on a "production level" and with minimal time investment.
But it will happen. It's inevitable. And I'll be there on day 1, trust me :)
As a customer and fan of video games I would honestly prefer to see this game continue though.
P.S. Have you tried reaching out to the community for help? I'm sure there are some people willing to assist just for a name in the credits. Had I the skills, I would- I helped out with some of the concepts for the mod Nali Chronicles (such as the unique backpack system, weapons, and magic abilities) for Unreal Tournament- just because I wanted to be a part of the community. A snail's pace is better than no pace.
