Choosing a character is just flavor. You will always end up using the most powerful weapon doesnt matter if you character is profiecient or not.
If you want a game that can use a lot of guns, I highly recommend Killing Floor.
Once you reach the second act, guns get pretty common and if you have the Bloodbath Arena DLC you can use guns from the beginning (just do a quick trip to the DLC store).
Picking up your character's skill weapon is also important, Purna, for example, can hold double amount of ammo & do much more damage with Firearms than anyone else (same with sharp weapons for Xian, who gets special moves with them), but that only comes into play once you get far (higher level) into the game, as for the first chapter, its pretty melee heavy with anyone but Purna or Logan (if you like throwing stuff).
