Is this game all about melee weapons?
I'm trying to decide if I wanna get it and have been watching movies and looking through the screenshots. I see mostly melee, like crowbars, pipes and machettes. I prefer guns to knives, and am wondering if ammo and ranged weapons are rare here. I don't wanna get a nice shotgun and never be able to find any ammo for it.

Looks like a neat game. Still pondering. I have until the 31st to make a decision. A few good games are on sale right now though, so it may not be this one. The gun/melee input will help make the decision easier, thank you!

you get more guns later and if you plan enough theres plenty of ammo, but it is primarily melee. you can spec guns though

I found it to be more kicking than anything else. Guns are rare and the melee weapons break down awful fast.

Mostly is melee and the making weapons are just as rare as the Duct Tape you need to make them.

Choosing a character is just flavor. You will always end up using the most powerful weapon doesnt matter if you character is profiecient or not.

If you want a game that can use a lot of guns, I highly recommend Killing Floor.

Thanks for the input. Was trying to only get one game during this sale, and I guess this one's a miss for now. Walking Dead looks nice, too, and I'm still looking at that one. The only downside is, I have to wait for the final episode, for who knows how long.

yeah the fourth ep of walking dead only just came out on steam so might not be for another month or so for the last ep, u can get guns early in this gane i beat this on 360 now playing it on here cos the price has dropped good fun zombie slasher/shooter with an RPG feel

guns are extremely situational in dead island, pistols and rifles are great against humans, but there are few human enemies, shotguns are great against special zombies, killing most of them with a single headshot.

It is mostly a Melee game's yes. But it does have shooting in it but ammo is scarce. As it shoot be, making you think about when to pull your gun.

I dont wanna sound rude, but most of the comments here are a bit off.

Once you reach the second act, guns get pretty common and if you have the Bloodbath Arena DLC you can use guns from the beginning (just do a quick trip to the DLC store).
Picking up your character's skill weapon is also important, Purna, for example, can hold double amount of ammo & do much more damage with Firearms than anyone else (same with sharp weapons for Xian, who gets special moves with them), but that only comes into play once you get far (higher level) into the game, as for the first chapter, its pretty melee heavy with anyone but Purna or Logan (if you like throwing stuff).

Thanks for your input. I didn't have all the facts, it seems, and didn't get it during the sale, because it seemed all melee from the videos and comments. I had planned on playing Purna, because she had the skills with firearms. I'll wait until the Thanksgiving Day sale and see if they have it then. I got Rage this time around, which I'm having a LOT of fun with, so I don't regret missing out on this right now.
