A few things you could try:

A) Try seeing if simply restarting Steam will help.
B) Verify your game cache. Right click the game in your Library tab, click Properties>Local Files>Verify integrity of game cache.
C) Go to MyDocuments>DeadIsland>out>Settings>Edit Video. Once there, modify Resolution to your current monitor's resolution ie: Resolution(1920,1080). If you don't have a text editor that can open that Video file from My Documents, you can download Notepad++. It can open it.

You can also try this:
1. Click Start
2. In the Search/Run box type:
notepad.exe "%USERPROFILE%\Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings\Video.scr"
3. Press Enter
4. Change the Monitor() setting to Monitor(-1)

D) Try going to your default download location for Steam. ie: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dead Island and run DeadIslandGame as Administrator.
E) If all else fails, contact Steam support and they can hopefully help sort things out.

1. Right click Dead Island and left click Properties
2. On General tab click Set Launch Options
3. In window that opens type -safemode -nologos
4. Click ok
5. Try starting game now
6. If successful, change your resolution in game and then exit game.
7. Repeat steps 1-4 but for step 3 remove -safemode -nologos
8. Start game and see if it works now.

5. Right Click on "DeadIslandGame.exe" and click "Properties"
6. On the "Compatibility" tab, check "Disable desktop composition"

Note: If dead island is installed somewhere else you need to modify the location in step 3

Lastly, are you sure your computer can even run DI? http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri That site isn't ALWAYS correct, but give it a go and see if you meet the minimum requirements

i tryed varifing my game cache and it said 1 files failed to validate and ill be reacquired. what am i missing? do i need to update something on my computer?

That happens sometimes. And it's not limited to just Dead Island. Usually if that happens repeatedly, you can move past option B, as one of the other things will likely help fix your issue.

n im playing on a vizio 32" flatscreen. what resolustion should i use?

Can't say for sure what would be best. For example tho, I play on a 23" monitor at 1920*1080 and it works perfectly. Have you considered using Steam's Big Picture mode? It works really well on my 32" flatscreen.

i trye the big pic mode n it didnt work, when i start it up theirs still like 25% of the right of my screen open. n i have aduio but no picture

I haven't used my tv as my display in a while now and I just checked it. I remember I had to do something kinda weird for it to work. I have my display resolution at 1280*720. I then had to edit that Video.scr file in My Documents and set the resolution to that as well. And voila, it worked. Give that a go and let me know if that works for you as well.

what should i open the video file in deadisland in my documents with? notepad?
hendawg2020 Feb 21, 2013 @ 6:47pm
One thing to note, if you decide to swap back to playing on a monitor, you will have to edit that file again. Also, I had to disable my 2nd monitor and I set my tv as my main display.

im probly just going to stay on my tv cus its tomuch work switching my monitor in and out n switching the resalustion

Unfortunately, there's only 2 ways that you can open it, that I know of. Download notepad++ and right-click>Edit with Notepad++. Or try the option between C and D.
