Co-op Exp Problem?
I was playing with a friend. We started together, and about an hour or so in, he just magicaly got 10 levels above me. We're thinking its the ''give water'' quest, it happened a minute or so after we threw her about 3dozen water bottles.

Basicely, I'm lvl 4, and he's level 14, and I'm killing stuff at roughly the same rate. I don't mind a bit of a difference, but that's overkill.

yeah I know, it happened to me all the time and this is ruining the coop. Mainly that happens because of the achievements which give insane amount of exp. There really should be an option to freeze or disable achievements when playing a coop game with friends
That would solve the problem.

When it happened to us for the first time, I was thinking it is a gitch. so we restarted the damn game, but after 10 mins of gameplay the levels got messed up again. It is REALLY stupid if the achievements don't give only some badges, vanity stuff but a LOT of exp. In some cases they give like a 15 level boost. This is crap

Achievements don't do it. But challenges do.
He just does more challenges than you. If you are lower in levels, just take his stuff, and shoot your levels up higher to his.

Plus, if he puts his zombies to level 14 it remains a challenge still. Like I get level 58 zombies while friends get level 32. Only downside is you can't really swap weapons.

The enemy level is based off who's seeing it. I hit a lvl 10 zombie, and he'll hit the same one, but lvl 18. The damage is mostly % hp, wich surprisingly scales very well.

I meant challenges. It's quite some time I played the game, so I called those challenges achievements. but the problem is still not solved. Those chellenges are global. So if someone is starting Dead island for the first time in coop with you, he will gain exp for easier challenges which are already grayed out for you since you've done some of them. It shoud still have a challenge-freezing option, because we do nout play coop just to 'be very carefull with those numbers, and just grind for some challenges if some mates get boosted ahead.

Actually enemy levels are not based on who's seeing it at all. Enemies will just spawn with different levels, while some will be too high to kill even if you break all your inventory weapons on them, while others will be one-hit with a knife. This leveling system is a really stupid thing in this game. Players should get only skillpoints to upgrade skills, not levels, because it would make it much easier to join in online coop without worrying about level differences. And skillpoints would be used to upgrade skills, learn new stuff, but levels are just stupid

Go into options, online, and at the bottom, it says how you see the enemies.

If it is put as "not my level" you see his zombies not your level zombies. Leveling is a great idea if you set it up so your fighting your own zombies and not your friends over powered ones.

I still don't get it why is that good for imersivity and gameplay to do selective fighting in a zombie apocalypse game... It's coop, not "everyone just fight his own zombies, leave the others alone" Once you level you get leveled zombies, which don't really fight harder, they are the same just their stats are different to scale with your level. So what is the point of leveling system, since at lv 40 for me it's the same feeling to kill an enemy as it is at level 1? It just destabilizes the coop gameplay but it really doesn't do anything else, just boosts the stats. So ultimatelly it would be better to just get skillpoints which makes higher level guys more skilled in their skill tree, but there would be not difference in levels.

Agreed.

Leveling also gives you more health. But we level, because that is how they wanted to make the game.
Some people can see it as a challenge. If I join a friend who is level 40, and fight their zombies, I can still kill them easily with a head stomp, but they hit me more.

Leveling is also for weapons. A level 50 hachet, will be stronger than a level 10 hatchet. Without a leveling system, all weapons would be the same too. After the first play through it would be boring, because you couldn't get better weapons.

again... this also could be done without the leveling system. Better weapons could be gained after reaching some goals, crafting, finishing some challenges, and so on. It could really be done without actual leveling. When you gain better weapos you could also play with friends who are newer to the game and the game would still be just as entertaining and challenging for all the players, whitout the inconvenient gaps of the leveling system. You just have more tricks to your disposal, more interesting ways to finish off enemies. This is not an MMO where everyone is grouping up with players who are close to their levels. Because even if you do, some achieved challenges will mess up the levels again, making the levelin system just an inconvenient gap which is just pushing coop players around

Now this Project was abandoned because of financial problems, and it was not finished. Much later the game was finished and published. What I think is that at first the game was not supposed to be a coop game, just a single player leveling based RPG-sandbox game. In that case the leveling is not an issue, because that way players feel some progress even if it's just a progress based on numbers, because the difficulty doesn't grow at higher levels.

Well, I see alot of reasons to have the levels. If you don't that is you. Difference of opinion.
