"Your connection to steam was lost" upon joining Co-op Dead Island

I've had this issue for a while now. Whenever I attempt to join another player (Doesn't matter if they sit right next to me and connect through LAN, or in another country and in internet mode) I get two messages in the game. "The connection to the current game session is unavailable at this moment" and "Your connection to Steam was lost". Steam loses it's internet connection, or at least it seems that way, because my friend list is empty, along with all the other symptoms of "being offline", even though I'm still connected to the internet just fine.

What makes me really pull my hair out is the fact that we played together last night, as a miracle out of the blue. This was after a week of trying when it randomly worked.

We both have Dead Island on Steam, and we're connected on the same router, so I don't see why the LAN shouldn't work. She uses Win8.1 and I'm on Win10 (I know, I regret it...), and I've been looking through a whole bunch of posts and information, and still empty handed. Here's what I've tried so far:

Restarting Steam.
Trying to join over and over and over again.
Making a new character, and play with it for a while. Can't join with either.
Changing the online options.
Connecting through an ethernet cable.
Restarting the computer.
Connecting through Hamachi.
Changing upnnp settings.
Disable firewalls and AVs.
Open the game ports manually.
Connecting with people from various areas. Doesn't matter if I'm the one hosting or not.

I haven't tried updating media centre, but if I remember correctly, it's not included in Win10, right? so what's to update?

Redownloading the entire game is not an option right now, for various reasons.

Anyone know what to do, because this is getting on my nerves.

Happened to me last night,i just restarted my phone(mobile hotspot)and steam itself.Though,still had problems connecting to a friend game until he found out he didn't leave any room for friends in online option.I dont know if thats what made it work or else,but it worked.

We both tried using any combination of the numbers in the settings, in case something got glitched. We were suddenly able to play together, but it's not working again. Maybe it's network protocols glitching when they are set up by the game? I'm no computer expert, but my experience in computer diagnostics and such have me wondering if that is the issue, since it works at random. This shouldn't be too hard for the devs to patch though.

I have a friend of mine from England however, and we have tried, and the same thing happens. We've only managed to connect once, and in every other attempt, the errors listed in the OP happen.

It's getting tempting to research the structure of Dead Island and program a work-around patch myself, but I don't know if I'm breaking any EULA that way

A friend and I are having many connection issues lately too in the Def Edition of the game. I cant see him when I join him but he can't join me at all.

dont bother, it's not much better visually, in fact might be more buggy than the original.

So now people are having problems with the DE as well? I'm not wasting my money on the DE, but I thought perhaps that if the DE worked I could edit the protocols to work with the original, but if that's gone to ♥♥♥♥ now as well, then ♥♥♥♥ it.

I'm not that much of a programming expert to write all the protocols used by the multiplayer feature from scratch..

And it's pretty obvious that they want us to use the DE, since they pulled the original from the store... But you can still buy it on other sites and download the game on steam ;)

First letter of the lines. Steam censors external links. That is a gray site, meaning you buy from other people. Some are scammers, some are legit. I've mostly had good purchases there, but if you buy the shield option, you'll get a refund if the product doesn't work
